thoughts on a masters of tax (GGU) or a tax llm (NYU/George town) (both part time) ? Mst being around half the price

Im an Australian CPA with an LLB at a big 4 in corporate tax consulting looking to do US tax (similar m&a / ITS)

Thanks

I would lean towards LLM if you want to do M&A Tax, it seems like most of our M&A practice has LLMs

like

I don’t think either are required to do m&a tax, but agree that either helps. I’d do mtax purely for the cost savings

I did my mtax and am in m&a tax

The LLM will get you higher pay and is more prestigious. But if this is primarily because the firm says you need a US credential and you need to meet education requirements, see if you can just get the EA - much less of a time commitment. Sure you’ll learn stuff with tax llm or mst but nothing about us tax that you won’t learn more quickly on the job, and you don’t need the degree to get hired by either M&A or ITS

like

GGU is fine, I did their MST, but NYU/GU LLM will get you a lot farther in M&A/ITS in my opinion

Half price as in 20k vs 40k? Or 50k vs 100k?

I would go big law if you go for LLM. Kind of a waste for big4

like

If you have an Australian LLB, the real benefit of doing an LLM (instead of an MST) is that the LLM should make you ‘bar eligible’ in some US states, which generally puts you on a higher pay scale at most firms.

I think the higher cost of the LLM program would be worth it for you. Also see if your current employers will pay for it.

LLM is the higher degree and would allow you to practice law here if you decided, assuming you pass the bar.

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?
