Here’s my honest take: those festivals are generally hotbeds of vanity, drugs, and hedonism. So even if you are not engaging in those things, you are putting yourself in near occasion of them. Are those behaviors that you personally want to support? Just something to consider.
Agreed!
Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Romans 13:11, ESV)
I think that if you have the chance to live while you’re young, then do it.
Just as there are pastors that don’t practice the principles in their day to day life, use discernment in who you patronize/support, but enjoy life, and living.
Is there the possibility of secular messages? Yes. Is it enough to keep you from going? That’s up to you. As for me, I know my faith can’t be wavered (of course I wouldn’t go to a hard rock/Marilyn Manson type concert) but as far as Coachella goes, it’s pretty tame.
Pray on it, go from there.
No I wouldn’t want to strengthen the hands of evil doers.
Which, a lot of secular executive music producers are.
Someone mentioned it above, but Coachella really isn’t a “tame” festival. Some people attend for the sole purpose of selling drugs or hooking up. It’s one thing to listen to the music, where you can pick and choose what you’re okay with, and it’s another thing to immerse yourself in the experience. It would take a lot for an atheist to attend a Christian worship festival, but it seems to take so little for Christians to attend these worldly festivals.
That said, no judgment here. If you do go, just don’t get drawn into some of the poor examples and choices
God has still blessed these individuals through Common Grace with gifts of beauty through their music. If these scenarios put you in a compromised state or are driving you to sin, then don’t go, but it’s not inherently wrong. We need to be aware of how society and what we consume is shaping us and that’s true of everything, brands, music, tv, conversations, fashion, etc
We get into a really dangerous line of thinking here: we can’t remove ourselves from the world. We are called to be witnesses and we can’t do that in our safe little circles. No, don’t put yourself at risk if you know you’re prone to this type of sin, we’re called to flee temptation. But, if you can do this safely for yourself, you can witness and show what it looks like to live differently.
If we take this line of thinking further, we can’t eat at non Christian restaurants, can’t work for non-Christian companies, purchase any sort of non-Christian product because all of our attention and dollars are supporting someone/something. It’s tough, but it’s a line we have to walk. We can’t shun the beauty of art, and food, and design that God has blessed among non-believers.
Broad denial of secular culture and escape from interaction with culture is not compatible with the cultural mandate that Jesus gives us
I don’t want to misinterpret your point here, but I don’t think they only make sense if you are witnessing. You can also go to appreciate the beauty of art created and presented. That’s a perfectly valid course of action
Appreciate all the perspectives! Will pray about it
