Thoughts on coverage work versus insurance defense?

Insurance defense is usually bottom of the barrel. Pay is terrible, hours are long, and the cases are typically repetitive and extremely uninteresting. Literally all I do is slip and fall cases involving 70+ year old plaintiffs

IMO, insurance coverage is a way better practice area, for a multitude of reasons including more sophisticated clients/work, better rates, and you don’t have to work for insurance companies (and, depending on your thoughts about them, you get to oppose their iffy practices).

like

Clerk 1. Depends on the firm. I do coverage work. Probably 50-50 split between insurer and insured.

Totally depends on the type of insurance defense. Huge difference between slip and fall insurance defense and professional liability/L&E insurance defense.

Like contract coverage? I do a lot of it and love it. I’m contracted full time by 3-4 different firms who pay me full time wages. I haven’t heard from two of them In 2 weeks. If you do this type of work have more than one contract, and just take in that cash. Will make a bit north of 450k this year.

like

No way!!! How do you even get into it? Apply? What do you look for?

Are they yearly contracts? What are the down sides?

I’m in ID as captured counsel. I enjoy it because it’s helping me learn valuable trial skills and at the end of the day no one usually loses anything except the insurance company. But, it’s repetitive, I spend A LOT of time reviewing medical records and telling my claims reps what’s going to happen if we try the case and they spend all their time not listening to me and not putting money on the claims. It’s frustrating. Plus a lot of the clients can’t understand how someone could be hurt in a car accident.

like

A3 - 95k/yr and I have no idea on comp ceiling bc I’m only in my 1st year of practice. We only get a 1-3% annual raise if business was good. But, no billables.

I agree that insurance coverage is a much better practice for the reasons stated. It’s also a question of what your long-term goals are. Not sure what exit opportunities exist for insurance coverage lawyers. Anyone with experience know?

Insurance companies, both legal and claims — usually more sophisticated product lines for claims (PL/D&O)

Coverage work is for a special breed, also know that if the carrier raises the defense of “advice of counsel” in a bad faith case, the AC privilege is waived and you can be deposed. Rates are usually a little better though.

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.

Thinking of switching employers. Do you think bigger retail stores (the ones that have several locations) are easier or harder to work at than little hole-in-the-wall grocery stores (which is all I've ever done)? It seems like the larger chain stores would have more downtime, but I'm wondering if anyone could give some input.

While he thinks that its genetics/being naturally gifted that got them to where they are I believe it's the environment & discipline that made them successful. We are not from said communities but curious to hear your thoughts on who is more accurate.
