First know and understand the temperature of the decision maker of the WFH. Then make it super easy for that manager to approve it, modify it or sell it to get approval. First rule - when making the case never say u want to do it bc becky/Ben do it, never compare your self to anyone else. Stick to the role, responsibility and metrics and not people.
So. 1st take pictures of your home office. 2nd layout the work schedule and hours of commitment, offer the flex time u think ur manager might need u to come in to the office (staggered once or twice a week/a month)3. Layout the tasks roles responsibilities and improved productivity/can do at home office vs. In office.
Goals: work life balance, less distractions, this time during covid you have seen an improvement in your own productivity and quality of work (be sure your manager agrees) you think meeting zoom technology is more efficient and you want to continue to capitalize on this momentum. Offer to write up a self evaluation with a follow up face to face with your manager as frequently as that manager would like to give it a try. But if you put together the WFH 2020 proposal and ask for feedback to find something that will work you might pioneer a whole new path for more than just your self. But making it easy for a manager to say yes is the best start. Good Luck.
Literally in your boat, I want more of it!
Maybe try requesting incrementally? You’re already doing once a week, maybe go up to 2-3 times a week when quarantine is over, so they see that you are maintaining work quality and productivity, and then scale up to permanent
I know, I think the bigger issue is if/how things will change if everyone else goes back to the office and OP continues to WFH. Could be different dynamics when people aren’t all forced to work remotely
I’d laugh an analyst out of my office if they requested “permanent WFH”. How do you think your fellow analysts and team members would react to that? Don’t you fear not showing your face in the office when everyone else is could set back your career?
For VP1 to consider, whose entitlement is in question here..the employees thought they are entitled to WFH or the companies entitlement that in today's culture they are expected into the office each day? Is that the first employee to ask for something others have "feared" to ask for bc of a toxic culture. Is it a scenario where we do it this bc we've always done it this way, not bc it the most efficient way to do it. Finally, not getting hung up on the permanent WFH ask, but the art of compromise and high performance...how does the company as a whole achieve better performance at less cost and is this a viable experiment? Employees who are brave enough to ask, to push the parameters as long as they are high performers reshape any business, software to Finance to Manufacturing.
I think in the new world order we are facing people will find themselves working from home more whether they like it or not. Wait and see how things pan out before asking. You may find they ask for volunteers, and problem solved. Conversely make sure you go into the office on a regular basis (maybe Thursdays, or every other Tuesday) because out of sight is out of mind.
I just recently got sign off to work permanently remotely (not wfh) hence planning my world tour trip for when covid lifts. Be open!!
Good luck
WFH is a benefit not as well as a privilege. There are other jobs that don’t require FaceTime and working fro home. However, finance is a business of relationship ships and relationships are made face to face. Maybe every other week or when you’re traveling or taking care of personal endeavors but I don’t see this being normalized in this career path.
I already do it. I work 4 days out of the week and go in on Fridays.
