He didn't get fired because of his idea per se, he got fired because those ideas, when expressed publicly in a company message board, help create a hostile environment for other employees, mainly women. In other words... awkward! So, yeah you kinda have to fire him to maintain cohesion.
@OP discrimination doesn't get to hide behind being "an opinion." If you think your co-workers are inferior to you based on gender, race, class, orientation, etc. yeah a company should be able to fire you. You might think one could keep those thoughts hidden but your co-workers feel it and it's toxic and completely unfair to your lgbt, female, POC, etc co-workers who deserve to work with people who view them as equals.
He deserved it. D-bag
I read it and it's not getting misrepresented imo ...dude is a misogynist
Good...who would want to work with him after that?
So everyone is okay with being fired for ideas vs actions? The notion you can be fired for an opinion is okay with people now? (Meaning he, as far as we know, did not discriminate against anyone). As a planner, I am very curious about this because it represents a real change in the way Americans think. I realize that advertising people are not a representative sample of the United States, but your points of view fascinate me.
Surprised it took them that long. Hope his ass never gets another job in tech...
👆 100% cw2. He ignored the culture and echo chamber effect in his own world that he derided as his main thesis against google's culture. Women have long been unheralded heroes of computer science and engineering. My own mother was an early programmer for a fortune 100 company when I was a kid. I read all through his post on gizmodo and he's essentially using eugenics as an argument. As has been said above, he used pseudoscience to advance the politics of a hostile work environment.
Fuck the memo the fact that the guy is now more than willing to be embraced by alt right propaganda pushing bullshitters rather than taking a measured approach going to established news places with his side of the story and better explaining what it is he was trying to get at speaks a lot about him. As a person of colour and a woman I encounter the argument that I am inferior on both fronts and iq and level of intelligence calls bullshit to that argument on both fronts. I feel no sympathy for him I hope he becomes a pariah not because he voiced his views but because his views are why I am always on the defensive and always feel like I need to work that much harder and be that much better because i worry that people think I am inferior and I want to prove them wrong and I am afraid that unlike my white male or female counterparts if I fuck up it has the potential to affect the company's willingness to hire other young black women and it's fucking exhausting. So fuck him and fuck his memo. I'm glad that he was fired and I hope that he never gets another job in tech. I'm sure that infowars or breitbart could use a web designer.
How is what he did not an action? He wrote a memo (with citations) distributed it using Google's email lists. Besides the fact that working at a company where you can be fired for anything dissenting opinions are welcome, as I far as I know, but the manner in which he did it invited overt controversy, something I can guarantee you Google wanted no part of. Had he done this in a live setting, I doubt he would've been fired but he put it on paper and left it for the world to see. Never put anything on paper that could bite you in the ass at a later point. You're simply inviting trouble especially now where everything is saved digitally.
What thought could anyone possibly have except "good, he deserves to get fired. I hope he ends up miserable and alone?"
@OP writing it and publishing it were the actions he was fired for. As a female who has experienced my fair share of sexism in the workplace, I haven't been able to read the whole thing because I start getting so angry.
SAM 1, no, it's getting pretty blatantly overblown/misrepresented in terms of what it says and how it says it
He's an idiot - all his good arguments were immediately followed by face palming. He has some valid points in there but he could have done with a proofreader who wasn't a complete misogynist or idiot he might have actually have been on to something. Instead he personifies the shit side of Silicon Valley
@OP Actions will always speak louder than words, but if your words lead to people feeling inferior and alienated because of their gender/race/etc, that's not an opinion that any company should condone. It promotes a toxic environment.
I read it. Fuck that guy.
I hear uber is hiring...
Science clearly says he is clearly inferior at the human race.
The guy came off as a cognitively dissonant ideological libertarian. He made arguments about how we should evaluate individuals as individuals and abandon "tribalism" which is not inherently wrong but he completely neglected society's effects as well as neglected the capabilities of our mind to combat generalizations (something we've evolved to do). Funniest part is he tried to use biology as a cover. Overall, just an idiot who wanted to rant a private company and is now upset that company doesn't want him as an employee. Life needs balance and he was not able to see those benefits.
It's unfortunate for him but he definitely deserved to be canned! I'm all for self expression and speaking your mind, however he crossed the line with his misogynistic pov. Any feelings of inferiority to another gender, race , class, etc. stems from his own insecurities and that's no one's problem but his own. Clearly this dude has the "dick complex" issue and to that I say: "WOMEN ARE THE FUTURE!! So fuck off" 👸👩👮♀️👷♀️👩⚕️👩🍳👩🏭👩💻👩🏫👩🔬👩✈️👩⚖️
