It really does feel like a lot of companies are just going through the motions. They're interviewing people and making all the happy talk, and like you say, wasting time. I think a lot of them are just stuck in neutral, wary of doing any hiring. And with all the layoffs going on, and more in the news every day, I'm not sure how far away the light at the end of the tunnel might be. It's a weird and unpredictable time. Only advice is to stay persistent and be positioned for something to happen when the tide shifts.
I feel your pain and wish the EU had salary transparency like the US does as part of their hiring practice. Nothing beats jumping multiple interview hurdles, enduring HR violation questions, being mocked openly for your accent, background, or former country’s political climate, and suffer through a painfully long hiring process to then learn that the job pays 60% less than what you would normally make (hello gender pay gap!) and then rejected and eliminated from candidacy when you try to negotiate. I now just brazenly ask for the salary threshold up front to avoid my time being wasted knowing that it may go against the hiring culture and impact my viability as a candidate.
This happened to me in Germany. I asked a company in round 1 what the salary range was and they wouldn’t tell me. I explained I wanted to make sure we were conscious of each other’s time. They looked at me like I had asked them when their last bowel movement was. They were visibly offended. That ended that.
I feel your pain.
It seems we are doing all these job interviews (thinking we did SOooO welllll -- All just to receive a "Thank you for applying, but unfortunately..." email.
It makes u want to punch through a wall and destroy some stuff. Very frustrating job economy right now... still searching & waiting myself.
I tend to agree with comment that often HR/TAs are frustrated, particularly the good ones. Unfortunately a lot of politics specially for executive roles, where no one wants to make a decision. Everyone is fearful of strong talent coming in and disrupting the status quo and existing power dynamics, so unless you have an in that can vouch it’s super tough to get in. Regular roles are just as competitive with so many talent unemployed particularly in tech where tech bros made it cool to fire people overnight without much reasoning other than profit increase. Word of advice is try to get an in, be upfront asking comp and hiring timelines and keep going until you secure an offer. Basically don’t get stuck thinking that because you are further along in the process you have the role, you really don’t until you accept the offer.
Feel your pain OP. Do you want to apply back at SF and be a boomerang? Through networking is the best way to get hired IMO.
Dealing with the same thing - got laid off in November, have gone through 3+ steps with multiple companies some that required a final presentation, all for nothing. Had a perfect fit, recruiter confirmed it was a done deal, VP I interviewed with said he was 99% sure budget would be confirmed for the role, and two weeks later I’m finally told budget was not confirmed and the position is no more and now I’m back at step 1 with new companies. Have 9 years tech sales experience and have always interviewed well + landed new roles in a month or two but the market is ridiculous right now companies are making absurd asks in the interview process and wasting ppls time
I ask very direct questions like this. The response time and actual response will tell you ALL you need to know.
probably DEI requirements and I suspect co. get some sort of kickbacks from gov or they need to keep up appearances of growth to keep investors placated and current employees in check
At this point you may need to rely heavily on your network. Try to find anyone you've done business with, worked with, generally know, etc and start asking for help with any openings or if they can put your resume in HR hands. A reference should cut down on a lot of this. Also, a young kid told me that he only got a job through a Job Fair. Why? They were able to see him and talk to him face to face and then did an interview. No resume tactics or anything else.
hire a recruiter! all the linkedin "careers" stuff is chatgpt clickbait... you see a job, apply, get the usual we appreciate your experience but we've chosen to persue other candidates.... you sigh.... 4 weeks later same position pops up again and again... clickbait. Linkedin is becoming less relevant and less a source of networking and education...now just another social media outlet. HIRE A RECRUITER that is in the space you are looking for, not hard to find...
Hiring a pimp is a sure-fire way to get treated like a you-know-what. They take a HUGE portion of your wage, are RIFE with fakes and data-leaks, and they only work for you if your job is in HIGH DEMAND. Don't be fooled. The middle-man isn't the solution, they are a leach on the industry
I am sorry to hear that. I know how frustrating these job interviews are and the process seems to get longer and longer. Its so frustrating to be looking for a new role right now. Hang in there.
I experienced the same. I might just take an office lady job if they offer me one.
I now am a strong believer that all these job openings are a front. They already have their candidate picked out (Typically in-house) but they need to interview outside of the company “JUST” to make it looks like they tried outsourcing but the only qualified ones were current employees. That’s why the one’s likes us who applied from outside of the company gets the sharp end of the stick. Basically wasting everyone’s time.
Currently on a team about to start interviewing proactively to fill a role we haven’t gotten budget approved for. We really want to get someone good and have them start quickly but there’s just red tape and finance gods to deal with. So either we wait around doing nothing until we have the full green light or start interviews now to hopefully have someone identified for the role asap. Nobody is actively trying to waste your time. The interviewers and HR are likely just as frustrated as you are with the process.
Why are you leaving SF? My advice would be to double down where you are and try to grow as much as possible. This market is shit and no one should be looking if they don’t have to. If you’re hot enough, companies will find you. If not, invest in yourself in your current role and wait until the market is better. If you absolutely have to leave, focus on your network and try to develop a relationship with a hiring manager who will give you a soft yes before they even have the req, and make sure they’re not just yanking your chain. They will still have to interview to check the box for HR, maybe internal and external, but if they have given you a soft commit upfront, at least the odds are more in your favor. And try to make sure they actually have some juice and someone else isn’t going to come over the top and take their headcount.
It’s like it’s the norm for some companies posting fake jobs to just have for their records when they actually start hiring
That’s the way it’s going right now. I’m working on a side hustle while I wait for the right thing. Hang in there
Bruh! I went through three same damn thing. The process is so frustrating. I finally got a solid gig after 3 months of dead end interviews. It's so annoying having to pour your heart out and let all these strangers into your professional past to no avail. I took a 6 week contract with Delta to keep some cash flow moving in the meantime while searching, so I'd suggest getting a temp job in the meantime. Anything is better than nothing. I had to humble myself and accept an offer that was significantly less that l than what I was making before but at least it's 100% remote.
Shoot, even the temp companies are not calling. It's rough out here.
Happened to me at Salesforce and Databricks. I’ll respect a company way more if they give me a solid no.
I believe many large tech companies are posting jobs they aren't actually looking to fill, for two reasons. 1. Tax incentives for actively hiring or looking to hire. 2. Give their investors the impression they are growing and need to hire. SF has the same jobs posted for 3 years and is one of the worst.
I'm not sure of your actual interview experience, but...
There are a lot of ghost jobs, i.e. the company advertising to keep staff on their toes, trying to see if there is someone better for less. Some of these reasons may be true. Could be a salary leveraging tactic. etc.
Advice: If you are getting that far and suddenly rebuffed, check your digital footprint. Even old social media accounts linkable via email account for backup can be picked up via AI trawl. Just one friend post posing with a bong as a joke is enough to cost you the offer.
