Trying to figure out if I’m about to get fired… worked on a reallllly hard high profile case - for months of 12+ days in a row; and got a review that rated me uncoachable and “would not work with this person again.” I did so much hard work but miscommunication with my director felt like it overshadowed everything.

Youz done dawg. Start thowin out rezzys and get interviews on the calendar WHILE you are still employed. Its immensely harder once you are not. Have that Plan B through Plan Z right NOW.

like

Typically you get one chance at redemption. So if this person said uncoachable, they will put you on notice and give you one more project to prove.

like

Curious about what happened but it's irrelevant.

Unless you've accumulated a ton of good will with other PPMDs, might as well start over and not fight this uphill battle

like

I had the same experience at my internship. It’s not really worth the uphill battle as O1 said. Start job searching as if they don’t fire you now they will eventually or they’ll make your life uncomfortable

like

I won’t tell you that this is a good thing

like

Generally you shouldn't have any bad reviews. Once you get one, it's time to exit.

like

Same situation, project ended but looking to leave. No point in sticking around in such a situation.

like

Ask for feedback.

like

Please know that the single data point of a +12 hour day(s) is irrelevant.

The outcomes of your workday and what you accomplished and the value of your accomplishments matter much more than simply hours worked in a day.

I’m assuming you know this because we are all relatively smart people in this industry. I don’t understand why people feel that the numbers of hours they work coincides with high performance - it doesn’t.

like

There will always be edge cases. I'm just talking about the average person

Uncoachable? Meaning….?

like

Hi D1:

Uncoachable meanings, in 10 variations:
1- can’t be coached.
2- can’t be coached but can coach me and I don’t like it.
3- difficult to deceive and it will be a pain point.
4- puts me at unease.
5- cannot be molded as I want so I will burn it.
6- I like to micromanage but I can’t and that’s a big issue of both micromanaging and trust for me.
7- doesn’t listen and makes me lose my time.
8- doesn’t listen and is right not listening to my bullshit.
9- that folk is already at my level.
10- that folk is above my level, red alert, let’s fire this young competitor, I was there before him/her, gonna teach him/her to shut the fuck up and respect elders that were there before.

I once met a recruiter that gave me that trait in an interview, my answer was that I was difficult to deceive. Big time when looking his non verbal communication. He was totally caught off guard. And yes, that recruiter was trying to deceive me.

I would try and be in person with your team as much as possible, that way you can showcase your effort and your willingness to learn/be coached.
Otherwise you will go on a PIP before you are let go so you will have a chance at redemption.

like

Sd1 unfortunately some teams are entirely virtual, which makes showcasing your contribution harder. On my team, a PM siloed himself working with a different senior, and me and a junior consultant were constantly shut out of meetings.

Did they provide you this feedback at any point before? I’d be curious why they didn’t bring up any negative feedback before, since you sound like you’ve been blindsided by this.
Assuming you were blindsided and you didn’t get any other negative feedback - I wouldn’t worry too much, but I would be proactive to see how you can do better.
If you’ve gotten this feedback multiple times at this point - might be time to look elsewhere. I went through the same with a former boss in industry and dealt with 6-12 months of negative feedback even though I was putting out quality work that the stakeholder appreciated (it was a mismatch between that boss and me since I got re-orged to a new manager), and I ended up leaving.
Just a note - for someone to fire you, usually they have to put you on a PIP and coach you for multiple months in a row to remediate whatever issue you had, and usually takes a while before they can formally fire you (unless it was something that caused significant risk obv)

After 6 years of temporary contracts and unstable situations, I find my dream job in my dream company. All of a sudden the world goes upside down and I get laid off. I start sending hundreds of applications, with only 2 recruiters getting back to me to say I don’t have experience for the job (this is how it works in Italy). Add a terrible health situation in my family and it seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Ugh. 😞
