Hi all. I am trying to determine if I am being compensated fairly. I am a tax manager (about to start my second year as manager) and have been with EY since staff 1. I was promoted to manager in June 2020 (during covid) and received a 7.5% raise. The class above me has mentioned they received much higher raises during their promotion years. My base salary is now approx. 97K. Any insights would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Your whole worldview will change when you travel. But i mean ACTUALLY travel not cocoon inside resorts.
there an mcd in chicago that’s international - i think it’s for hq. they rotate menu items based on what they serve in other countries. it’s super cool!! i had wasabi fries and a baci mcflurry (italy)
Experiencing different cultures opens up your worldview. The experience of seeing different things, eating different foods, living a different lifestyle is absolutely worth it to me.

Experiencing places and cultures that are different from what you would encounter in your day to day life. Interacting with people of different backgrounds who’d you never meet otherwise. Traveling broadens our minds.

I guess I see traveling mostly as vanity. People tell me about their night out in Europe, 5 star restaurants, and visiting historic cities (tourist traps). Hardly ever saw it as anything other than entertainment/hobby.
Only exceptions were few people that went to missions in South America and Africa and really lived among the people of different culture. But these were types of things that not anyone could/would do.
BCG I’m with you. I grew up on the south side of chicago. Poor as fuck. Now I’m doing very well but don’t have any desire to travel to fancy places. Sure I like seeing cool places, who doesn’t, but generally don’t need to be anywhere fancy
Don’t really get all the replies here. If you don’t like travel, don’t. Spend the money and time on something you do like. It’s that simple.

It’s overrated. I enjoy traveling every now and then, but definitely need to a lot for work.
There are many things for you to do to enjoy life, whether you travel away or not. But you should definitely do it a bit here and there to be able to explore and learn other culture and lives around, or simply enjoy nature
If you try a couple times and don’t find it enjoyable, consider switching your method of traveling or it’s really not for you and it’s perfectly fine
It’s perfectly fine not to enjoy travel. Many people don’t.
You’re smart. Save your money for the things which mean the most to you.
@C2 - I’m affirming OP’s freedom to like or dislike whatever he wants.
Some people like to travel. Some people don’t. There’s nothing wrong with either. It’s as simple as that.
You’re the negative person here calling people names.
Best traveling I did was to a small town in Mexico, rural Thailand or West Bank of Israel, all three places I played soccer with kids who had nothing more than a ball. Tourist and luxury retreats don’t appeal to me. Playing soccer from sun up to sun down was the absolute highlight.
A1 beat me to the same point
Spend/save the money on/for what you enjoy or things you consider as good “investments in yourself.”
You don’t have to succumb to this pro-travel peer pressure if it doesn’t interest you.
Who knows, maybe your interests will change over time towards travel…. At which point it sounds like you’ll have a lot of money saved
You budget, and account for traveling. I keep aside 10% of my salary for it.
Nothing is more valuable than novel exciting experiences, that’s how we can fully live life. From mental health, to openness to cultures, to making you a more interesting person there’s lots of pros.
How are you defining travel? Nobody likes waiting in airports and security checks and flight delays and the like, so we can put that aside. This is a necessary evil to overcome.
Are you really saying that there is absolutely no food you want to try or place you want to see, or thing you want to do, or people you want to have $ex with outside of the city you currently live in?
Specific benefits: food is amazing in some other places, and the food is sometimes difficult or impossible to recreate or buy at home. You can have a lot of fun $ex, and there are geographic/cultural twists that are less common where you are. You become a more interesting person who can have better, more informed conversations, which is handy for work, family, social circles, job interviews, etc.
Why do you not like to travel? It’s the best. Getting to be somewhere new and experience new things changes how you see the world and yourself. You learn about yourself when you are in different settings, it helps you connect to others and you get exposed to new (to you) ways of thinking. It helps you understand your clients if you have experience in the place they live/ do business, and seeing how the rest of the world does things is always a good thing.

There seems to be something deeper here. Think back to your childhood. What happened? Who went away and now that has you thinking that traveling is not good?
I travel for hiking. That's really about it. Don't need the super fancy stuff but will treat myself on occasions.

Traveling is dope I’ve done a ton of it. But there are also a plethora of people who don’t get that much out of it and would rather save the money when young
