Pluckers
Stay in the area in the red circle. Most of it is pretty walkable and next to attractions.
It’s Austin; 1) why would you expect things to be cheap? 2) if they want to get a feel of actual Austin attractions, what other areas would you recommend besides the one I circled? The further you move away from the area to the burbs or cheaper area, you might as well go to any other city in the suburbs
For serious, don’t consider moving here until you visit in the middle of summer. In a few weeks it’ll be perfect and everyone will be happy and (good) sunny and full of that “we’re so glad we don’t live in the north” haughtiness.
July is for the Gs. But if you can’t stand it, it isn’t the place for you. Regardless of the food.
Sep is for the G’s! After July + Aug have all 100+ degree days, 1st half of Sep is above 100 and 2nd half is above like 90!
For food:
Uchi/uchiko/uchiba (Japanese/sushi)
Loro (Asian bbq fusion)
Buffalina (neopolitan pizza and wine )
Pint house pizza (Pisa and brewery)
Drinks:
Here not there (speakeasy craft cocktails - download the app)
Red headed step child (also known as floppy disk repair co - speakeasy can get the password from any bar on 6th just ask the bar tenders)
Lolo wine - bar
Intero - restaurant
Odd Duck - restaurant
Cosmic East (on 4th st) - coffee
things to do: I’m biased to the east side but love hanging on east 6th or east 12th. One of my personal fave things to do is walk along the river/pedestrian bridge near S lamar & auditorium shores
East side recs -
Kemuri: Japanese izakaya meets Texas BBQ
Cosmic Saltillo: coffee, daytime drinks - DO NOT eat the tacos there, instead go to Veracruz or Pueblo Viejo
Nickel City: great bar plus great cheap junky food (late-night spot)
KG Bbq: new school BBQ
Had to LOL at your passion for not eating the tacos at cosmic
Kinfolk Lounge and Library (reservation needed), Midnight Cowboy (reservation needed), Terry Blacks Barbecue, and Artipasta
Punch Bowl Social, roaring fork, pin ballz, domain mall,
Loro for happy hour
Cosmic on south Lamar + LeRoy and Lewis bbq truck on site
Walk around on both sides of the Congress bridge and into zilker
Veracruz taco truck
Lazarus brewing for local brewery and east 6th vibes
Most folks have mentioned downtown area, check out other areas to better a better “feel” for the full Austin scene (e.g., the domain, arboretum, mueller, pennybacker, SoCo, etc.)
Lots of great nightlife all over - Rockrose in the domain, West 6th, Dirty 6th, West 4th, East side of downtown). Look it all up and pick a place that seems to match your vibe or what you’re feeling during your visit.
