I’m really sorry if this is something you’re going through! The advice I can offer is to hustle right after you find out. I know folks from my lay off experience who took time off or delayed starting their job search process (which if that is what you need, do what’s best for you), but I found I had a leg up by doing so. Use your network, use colleagues who left or got laid off before you, use any job search resources your current company offers and you’ll be fine. I ended up having a job secured before my severance pay ran out and I love my company more now than I did before.
I got laid off from a bank and was depressed because I thought I was going to be a great banker and my identity was tied to being a banker. Looking back, I was miserable and always chasing the wealth. I ended up quickly moving out to the west coast with a great team at PwC and honestly, looking back, getting laid off was the best thing to have happened to me. I also met my long term gf through traveling on this job, so I owe my life to that one pivotal moment
Was told I was about to be laid off but found a new position before they could actually pull the plug. So far it’s been the best thing ever, it gave me clarity on what kind of people I want to work for and the type of work I want to do. Every person that I’ve heard being laid off has said the same thing and I doubt you’ll be an exception to that, chin up
Laid off, but actually expected it, and had some interviews lined up. Ended up getting an offer 2 days later which made the severance pay a really nice bonus.
I’ve gotten laid off and friends have too.
Can oftentimes find a better job and more pay! Enjoy the time off and remember that things iron themselves out overtime
Found a better job, environment and pay immediately while still getting severance. Bring laid off was the best thing to happen to me!
What kind of job?
Was laid off before. Received severance and then found a new job with a signing bonus. Bought some new furniture. Next job took me into a much better career path. Most recently I wasn’t laid off but career path hit a wall. I probably wouldn’t have left as I really liked the company and team. Felt I was being pushed out. Joined another firm - 50% more salary, no travel, better resume. Never imagined even getting paid that much more. Good luck to you op. Keep those skills up and don’t lose hope. Always a market for good people. 🙏

There are current BCG partners who’ve been laid off in the past (including by BCG). Never the end of the road.
It forced me out of my comfort zone. I took some time to breath and reevaluate what I was looking for and then made a move. It was the push I needed to take a risk and try something new. Looking back- it’s the reason I’ve accomplished the success I’ve had to date. I’m really sorry you’re going through this and I know right now it’s really hard, but you will come out of this ahead. Keep your head up and don’t rush into something new for the sake of simply being employed.
Life will hand you lemons from time to time so make sure you always have a juicer. Knowing that downtimes never last will keep you going till the next gig. But never tie your person to a job. At the end of the day it’s a job like the million others. You are more than your job.
Been laid off from a different MBB. It was devastating back then but it hindsight it made my life so much better, and also allowed me to scape a toxic environment that was consuming me.
And as some say, not the end of the road, look at me now at BCG.
I may not last that much longer, but honestly, I no longer care either. The experience taught me that I win more than lose in that situation
