Raises were zero or nominal. It was a very tough time. At some firms/offices I heard of pay cuts. Some places had layoffs but not everywhere.
I feel like thing started picking up again in 2011-12. Layoffs were pretty much limited to 2009 which was the height of the recession for the firms.
I was hired straight out of college in early 2010. Had a decent raise in year 1 and a really good one the following year (but it was my promo year)
I should mention I was a new tax associate
Layoffs in struggling Advisory groups and no raises in 2009 for Assurance. Personally had my offer letter “revised” as they lowered my base pay and made up for it in bonuses. Not ideal but was happy to have a job at the time.
I started in September 2008. For October 2009, we got .5% raise just so we made a little more than incoming staff. We were told no other levels for raises. After that year, everything was back to normal.
it was a very dark time.
Definitely
For 2008 grads I heard a lot of them got their offer taken from them
I don’t know about “a lot” but some did and some got offered smaller starting salaries
Yea I don’t think it was a coincidence that my bonus was above this range and my raise was good, but a little less than I expected. Would expect more value in the performance / variable comp than in base as it is mentally much easier to reduce bonuses in a downturn, but not base salary
Our firm did a ton of layoff right before Christmas 2008. Two of 5 floors were let go. those of us who stayed received no bonuses or raises and were happy with staying employed.

KPMG OP, are you asking assuming a recession?
I was promoted from Associate to Senior at KPMG in 2009 with no raise, no bonus. I was also unassigned for 2-3 months, so pretty lucky I still had a job.
Started in July of 2009. As we were walking in, people were walking out (layoffs). Got 1k raise so we made more than incoming staff. But everyone else didn’t get a raise. Bonuses were not a thing back then.
The year after raises were minimal - but there. I think I finally felt at ease with my raise when promoted to manager which was 2013(?) Also was top performer in all my years
Good question, but I also think the next recession won’t be nearly as bad as ‘08. So I don’t think we would have nearly as much to worry about, if one was to come say next year.
