Never go first in a negotiation.
Do some research on what the average pay for that level in LA is. Glassdoor and Aquent have decent charts for this. Know what you'd want to ask in the interview or if you get an offer. I wouldn't give a range. If you haven't yet had the interview they are probably weeding based on how much potential new hires will cost. You can avoid giving an answer by saying your willing to negotiate on salary. If you have to give a number, go with your gut on how much you feel you are valued.
Well if they seem seriously interested then give them your number. Air slightly higher than what you think they'd offer. If they feel it's too high they'll counter. You can try to negotiate extra PTO too if they don't accept your original number.
If you provide a range, then you lose negotiation power for anything above the lowest number. Go high and say you're willing to negotiate for the right opportunity.
Has the "go high and willing to negotiate" worked well for anyone else?
Find exactly what the salary band is for the roll in the agency's city. Make them say a number first. Usually, it will be lowish. After that you say "Well that sounds nice/low, but my understanding of the position's salary band in <city> is around "X." "X" makes sense to me because <reasons why you are worth "X">. Then just let them talk. They might ask what you currently make to try and use that as a reason they could pay you less than "X" but Gator don't play no shit, you feel me?
*you are
Definitely going to do some good ol' googling, but I have had the interview (two actually) and the recruiter said they are eager to hire me. Seems a bit backwards to ask for salary req after telling me that, but hey...
Ask what they are offering, then provide a range.
Always go high because they will counter. If they do, ask about signing bonus.
Gator aint never...never been about playing no shit!
Let them make the first offer. Then counter with 3-5k above what you had in mind so they can lower it without dropping below what ya want.
For LA: Boutique mid level 60 - 70. Big agency ~100 (they're stingy with senior titles)
Compare benefits from what you have too. That makes them have to get that info to you, and buys some time. Also, it actually matters and can be used as a negotiation point. "My last company offered a stock purchase plan and matched at 75% on my 401k, but I don't see that here..." Same with vacation as Sr Art Director said too.
I always ask for a range and say a large part of salary requirements depends on benefits and PTO.
