Deloitte has a way of putting their best spin during the recruiting process and then you are thrown to the wolves when you actually start. And if you ever slip up, well that’s on you. I would go Role #2 every day of the week.
Source: someone who has led many recruiting efforts at Deloitte.
Role 2. Tons of people at Deloitte are pretty stressed, but we’re just very good at hiding it. SC is a tough job and it only gets harder and more stressful- it’s not unusual to hear horror stories about SM level work, and because of the up or out culture you really do need to keep rising.
This is all for traditional model, specialist track may be different
In practice, I dont see the difference betwen traditional and specialist tracks...I see Specialist Leaders driving sales and managing teams/ projects and vice versa with Senior Managers, the only upside for SMs is that they have a chance to make Partner and get some equity, but then I hear MDs are not badly compensated either so...
That 17% bonus number is the top end of the possible range. I would probably factor a ~10% bonus into your calculations.
Also, are you sure that Role 2 is more stressed? Weekly hours at Deloitte can vary from 35-60+ depending on the project so it can end up being very stressful
In Deloitte, Yes those are.
I went with Role 2. It was surprising to see the comments so one-sided! Thanks nerds
How stressed at #2 place? Worse than Deloitte?
I know right!? Just seemed noticeable during interviews that the team was frazzled. I could be reading too much into it
Wow congrats on the offers OP. Didn’t know Deloitte SC went that high. Mind me asking how many YoE?
7 years total! My career path is a little weird. 5 years in industry straight out of college. Then last 2 years Consulting in Bay Area
#2. Equity is a god damned dream....
You will be very stressed and have very little free time at a big 4... take it from someone whose looking for an out... might just be a bad time at #2. I can guarantee a bad time at #1
Pick Number 2 ma lord!
Go for Role 2, you can always exit and return to a Big4, even at a higher position, the other way around me is much more difficult
I would go with Role 2, also. Merit increases at Deloitte will be smaller, the stress is definitely there on some engagements, and rarely will you ever receive a max bonus.
17 years consulting and moved to industry, never done a timesheet since and don’t miss it for a second. Go for #2 and don’t believe the bonus BS in consulting. It will happen once in 4 years while the others you take “one for the team”
Agree wholeheartedly
Dont join Deloitte. You will regret after joining. These bonus numbers are just numbers on the paper. Actual numbers will be way low
Option #2. It’s a no brainer.
Role 2, no question
Role 2. You been in consulting, try something else.
17% annual bonus is top end. It’d be lower most years (I think) and could be 0 in a bad year (Covid)
I would 100% go tech and easier to bounce around once you’re in
Bowl Leader
Voting #2 as well. See where that company can take you. You can always go back to consulting if it doesn’t workout. Just keep those technical skills sharp.
Congrats!! 🎉🎈
Second role. I like the equity, investments generally go up.
Role 2
Role 2 for sure. The stress level and wlb in Deloitte is awful. Period!!!
