not to make your decision more complicated, but you can still get unemployment if you resign. i know because i did it. i’m not sure it works in all cases, but the way it worked in mine was that someone called me to discuss the circumstances of my resignation and had a fairly in depth conversation about the timeline and details. my former employer did not contest the unemployment claim. for me this made the most sense because my former employer offers no details for prospective future employers regarding my tenure there; only confirming the dates that i worked there and that i was not fired. obviously there may be other factors at play for you and this only speaks to unemployment $$$, not any other benefits. so if i were you, i would at least call your state unemployment agency or check their website to try to determine under what circumstances you can draw unemployment.
Also you get unemployment after being laid off, you’re less likely to get it if resign legit no reason to resign here ..
Alternative... try to negotiate a transition period where you stay employed, with benefits for a couple months while you actively look for employment. Then agree to resign. If you are US employee, you are employed at will, unless you have a prenegotiated contract. Which means they can fire you for any reason (short of a protected reason) and technically (again unless local laws or internal policy in an hr manu say otherwise) can provide little or even no severance. Best bet is consult an employment lawyer for advise. They usually do initial calls for free or little money... Good luck... I know the certainty sux. As others have said, look at this as an opportunity to invest in yourself. If you do stay in consulting, on the bright side, it will make you more empathetic when you consider head count reductions for your clients in the future.
Good... essentially that is your working severance.... now leverage all the nice folks here to get your resume out there.
OP, I know how awful it feels - I’ve been made redundant before. I took it personally, even though I’d been having success. I’m not saying you should do what I did, but my boyfriend and I sadly and mutually split at the same time and I thought, well, f this, and went to Argentina and Peru to eat and think. I trekked with some amazing guys from America and Singapore, went home, and started applying for jobs overseas. This was the beginning of an international career that led me to the best place I’ve ever worked (BCG). The braindead cliches have validity - I couldn’t see it at the time, but it was an awful outcome that set me on a path to a life I wanted. Take the time to grieve. It sucks. But now you can do something else, and there’s much to choose from...
Big fan of international career
COBRA is really important too! In your package, you should ask for: - severance (salary and pro-rated bonus...this ultimately depends on what's written in their policy. Ask to see the policy and for the calculation breakdown) - COBRA (health insurance coverage and employer co-payment) - All fringe benefits to be cashed out (eg. PTO) - All of the above paid in the normal payroll cycles instead of a lump sum (eg if you get 3 months severance, then you get paid per usual over the next three months. This extends your COBRA payments and coverage to the same period) - the right to say on your resume that you're employed with the firm, as you start looking for a new job Feel free to DM with questions.
Listen to this person. They know what they are talking about.
Check on your local laws in your state I’m not sure if you can draw unemployment benefits if you resign. You could be entitled to hundreds $ per week for a benefit that you paid for with your taxes if they lay you off. If it is their business model that failed, I don’t know why you need to resign unless they’re offering a package based on your resignation
Agreed. Do not resign unless they are offering a package (get it in writing)
Why would you resign? That means no severance pay.
As others have said - do not resign!
Honestly, be happy and positive. I’ve worked every day for 31 years and my longest break was 14 days and I only had one of those. We spend our life working and then we are old and our health is gone and we are killing our selves for the promise of a piece of freedom that never comes. Get a headhunter, tell them to find you a job and then go hike mountains and explore forests and see the things in life that don’t cost a lot of money but take time. You will find another job but you will never get this time back so cherish is and use it and be happy about it. I promise the work will be here and it will find you...
Really, Who are you? Deepak Chopra?
OP don't resign. You lose so many benefits that way. Don't do it
Financially for you, yes. Reputation wise for them, no. I would simply ask to discuss the package they are offering you to leave.... start from their opening offer.
Yeah thats a good way to frame it without sounding difficult
My manager told me it's a purely business decision. They don't have enough work to support the team I'm in. In the cuts on the team, as a junior resource, I'm being asked to resign. He told me he'd give me a strong recommendation for where ever I want, but honestly, I don't know how strong it would come. This feels awful.
Yeah sounds par for the course. Where are you based out of
So it's better to be "laid-off/fired" than to resign? They make it sound like I'm being done a favor.
Don’t resign. You won’t get unemployment. They are messing with you. You’ll be seen as walking away from the job vs being laid off.
OP which firm? I have noticed this becoming a trend
Wondering this as well
Thank you everyone for the kind words. I've updated my CV, and I'm practicing cases and frameworks again. Thank you everyone for reaching out and offering referrals. I'm blown away by your kindness.
VP love you comment :)
DM for a referral
Stay strong bud :(
Agree with most of this thread. Under non circumstances resign. Your employment contract probably has severance if you are laid off but you get nothing if fired. Also agree on unemployment points
Do not resign!
Why in the world would you resign! Ypu lose unemployment and cobra.
I agree with D1
Do not resign you won’t get unemployment or a severance
