Certificates depend on your functionality
But the formula is simple for up to Manager
1. Do strong work as an individual contributor
2. Keep gaining more responsibility
3. Ask to get staffed in a senior role
4. Make the case for promotion
That's how I went from analyst --> consultant in a matter of few months 🤗
Nothing better than finding an advocate who would be pushing your case for promotion and then there are those other things.
I work in a technical space and have worked at Deloitte, Accenture and Slalom. In that order. For me, certifications were huge in flying through the levels. Since I’m on a data & analytics path my certifications revolves around Azure and Databricks. I can answer specific questions about those, if you have any. Other than that, C1 and C2 have it spot on. Had someone advocating for me all along and were confident in me being able to handle more and more responsibility, which I kept asking for.
This took me from analyst -> SC in 2.5 yrs
Getting a Salesforce cert helped - but not...because of the cert. There was a big initiative for all practicioners to get certified so that we'd rank highly in the Gartner quadrants.
My boss's boss said "everyone get certified" so I did. I cited this in my year end reviews, and that got me the "exceeds" in the skills dimension of the review, which I needed for promo.
No cert will ever be enough for you to progress on its own - and once you make manager, your hard skills begin to become less important in general.
Get whatever cert your practice is pushing, and bring it up come review time.
