Hospital/Inpatient Acute case management will generally be the biggest jump for most SW’s within the first few years.
Once you have that under your belt, you can generally negotiate a higher salary when branching out to different settings.
With acute hospital case management, you can also look into LTACH case management which can also give you a bigger salary jump moving forward.
I doubled my salary going from a nonprofit grant funded position (SUD counselor) to an private outpatient MH PHP/IOP program (Psychotherapist). However, I will say the benefits at the nonprofit were significantly better and I liked the work life balance I had there.
Medical is generally going to pay best. Also direct psychotherapy can pay well but you generally need a license to provide those types of services. So unlicensed medical social work is likely the highest paying.
I’ve made salary jumps by changing roles. There is a high demand for mental health services now so providing psychotherapy can be very lucrative.
Working at a VA hospital, consulting and higher education all generally high paying
I work at a level 1 trauma center in Richmond VA. Started at 50k in 2018 and last year I made 78k. I’m licensed in Virginia now and plan on doing travel Hospital Social Work in the future.
I work in an acute care psychiatric facility as an admissions therapist. Generally, substance abuse and mental health facilities pay more even as a registered intern. The world is our oyster really these days & negotiating your salary is an important piece. Bear in mind that diverse experiences will add to your leverage when negotiating. When I graduated, I worked a year as a contract clinician for a community mental health facility. Great experience going to the schools, homes, or office building working with families, adults, adolescents, and children. Then I worked in Detox for a year, residential level of care at another faculty for substance and mental health before accepting a position in acute care at the facility I am now. Diversify, as social workers, we are able to branch out to pretty much anything and don’t be afraid to be creative. Try and find your niche.
I think it differs a lot based on area too. When I lived on east coast it was different than in Chicago now. I made 70k after 1 year in assertive community treatment on east coast. In Chicago now, same ACT role makes less than medical and inpatient. So weird to compare.
But yes also nonprofit vs private.
