The thing with pet insurance is that it's a reimbursement model, so you're still responsible for the upfront cost of the care. In that regard, I have a credit card that I keep empty and save specifically for if I ever need to pay for emergency care. Then I can file the claim and work on the reimbursement from there.
IMO, whether or not pet insurance is worth it depends on your individual circumstances. If you have a healthy pet and are not concerned about unexpected veterinary costs, it may not be necessary. However, if you want to be prepared for the possibility of unexpected expenses and have peace of mind, pet insurance can be a good option for you.
My take is that if you can't afford an unexpectedly huge healthcare cost, the insurance probably isn't a bad call. I can't afford a sudden $5,000 cost if I should need to, god forbid, so I decided to get it.
I have pets best. I've had it for like almost 2 years and never had to use it yet. The prices aren't bad per month and they have different tiers of insurance. I think mine that just covers accidents and emergencies is like 30 a month.
Personally, I don't because I have 5 animals and the cost to cover all of them is more than it would be worth. Especially since all but one is under 3 years old. It makes more sense for me to just put that money into savings and have an emergency fund for them. Now if I only had one or two animals, I think it would be more worthwhile. I may change my mind as they get older too with more risk for health issues.
Pet insurance seems not worth it when your pet is young and healthy. But if I could go back and do it again, I would get the insurance. I should have had pet insurance when my dog got a brain tumor. They would have covered around half of the cost.
I’d recommend pet insurance for any accidents that may occur. Whoever you choose to go with, I’d definitely advise that you read the fine print, compare the reimbursement rate and see if there’s a “price lock” guarantee for at least a certain amount of time like for different life stages. I signed my dog up for Trupanion after thorough research. I like that they pay the clinic directly and that I don't have to pay a deductible every single year. I also like that they have an easy claim process.
Pet insurance has saved multiple clients I work with. Dogs needing meds that would be $400+ per month, emergency surgery, or back surgery. Just get Insurance before your dog is diagnosed with anything. Anything preexisting condition won't be covered
Emergency vet bills can get very expensive quickly, and you'll be glad to have the insurance when needed. It might not seem important at first, but it will come handy. It would be terrible to have to decide to surrender your dog to a shelter or euthanize it because you couldn't afford lifesaving care.
Another thing to add, note that most insurance plans won't cover routine preventative care. That said, having pet insurance is about peace of mind. With the right policy, you can avoid the terrible choice between huge financial sacrifices and caring for your pet. I have it, though I haven't used it yet.
If your cat gets into an accident or gets sick, you’ll still need to pay upfront. So I highly recommend ensuring you have good and decent credit on your credit card. Basically, you have to pay upfront, file claims, and get reimbursed. And you’ll have to meet your deductible. But especially with an adult cat, for instance, you’ll be glad to have it. The deductible is easy to meet; the cat will need blood work, dental, and possibly treatment food if she has an issue.
In my experience the pros are that owners are able to afford certain procedures that are a lot of the time unexpected. Cons are that the process to get a claim is extremely long and tedious
For clinics it helps because pet owners are more likely to bring their pet to the vet when they have insurance, but pet insurance plans can be expensive
