Another year as an SA, a role that gives you an opportunity to stretch and learn from a good manager will 1) result in a higher performance rating 2) help you establish a positive report with more senior leaders and 3) help you prepare to be a more effective manager when you are ready to make that jump in a year. After the last year we have had, an extra year at SA makes sense. As we figure out what work looks like going forward, it will help to get an extra year to understand what the most effective managers do and more importantly *dont* do.
If it's truly next year, you have plenty of time to gain the skills. Regardless, do not tell your boss that. Major red flag.
Right, but this far out of a potential promotion sounds like you are telling them a year in advance you don't want to be considered. Orange flag at minimum.
This isn’t a for-sure thing at this point, it just has been mentioned to me that I could be up for manager next year. I’m 25 and have 3 YOE and am paid like an M1/M2 so just trying to think ahead of if I’m not feeling ready.
