What do you do when small local firms won’t give your resume the time of day, but everyone you ask for resume feedback on says your materials are fine? These aren’t big law or boutiques, we’re talking probably paying $20-30 an hour part time as an associate with firms of 1-3 attorneys generally. I know biglaw is recovering from COVID but has it really hurt small law so badly getting an interview is next to impossible? Any and every practice area. Work is work. Approx. 500k local population size.

Maybe if you reach out to attorneys to ask for informational interviews instead if applying you'd get a bit more traction? End every interview with a sincere "This has been so helpful--can you put me in touch with one or two more people to help me along as I figure out next steps?" and your jobsearch will keep moving.

Good luck! It's easy to toss an anon resume in the trash but harder to ignore a person that you have had zoom coffee or socially distanced coffee with!

I relocated from a major city (small firm) to a city about the size you’re talking about and after months of unsuccessfully applying for jobs on LinkedIn, I started cold emailing partners at local firms basically just asking for advice on how to relocate. Literally made a spreadsheet of firms and emails from googling “[city] and [practice area]”. I ended up getting a job at a firm that didn’t have a position posted but was in the process of hiring a head hunter. I also had a handful of phone calls/informational interviews with local firms and that was good to get a feel for my future network. I think the personal touch goes a long way, especially with a smaller firm.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I am a young professional... But every job interview I’ve had so far pretty much just wants to know what kind of person I am. They are as interested in my leadership/communication as much as they are in me talking about my experience.

(“Real jobs” in accounting, finance and private equity.)

Is this how it will always be? Or is this predominantly because I am in lower positions at this point in my career?

I’ve had several great interviews with a few diff companies. Or rather, I thought they went well but then I get the dreaded “thanks but we made the difficult decision to move forward with other candidates”. I’ve asked for feedback but so far have gotten none.

I know it’s competitive out there, but I also don’t know how I can either position myself better, seek positions that are more aligned with my expertise/experience, or work on improving certain areas.

Any advice on how to proceed?

Hi - I am a career pivot from higher education into tech and have final round interviews for a DEI Coordinator role (which I'm super excited for). I am meeting with three people that I would be partnering with for the job and it was shared with me that these interviews will mainly be behavioral as well as questions on my technical skills. Does anyone have any resources to help me prepare for this? Anything is greatly appreciated!

I’m guessing it could take me to 170ish with that schools I’m looking at but wondering if the 40-50 retirement range makes an mba not make sense since I’d only have 10-20 years to save vs 12-22.

Would have to finance the whole thing myself. Current net worth is 140k. Thoughts?

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
