What famous leaders get way too much credit? I'll start, Steve Jobs was a horrible person, a terrible leader, and had some truly insane personal and professional beliefs.

He was a marketing genius and got the credit he deserved. Horrible person/leader/beliefs? Possibly to some, but separate from his professional credit. On the other hand. Trump. Horrible business person/leader/beliefs.

Ok, aaaand? Saying you are glad cancer got him in the end is telling. Most people that claim sweatshops and exploited labor are in a privilege high horse. Those workers had a choice and chose to work to benefit their lives. That cash was welcomed in those households.

You can draw many parallels between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. The man was absolutely ruthless back in the day, but he has done a lot of work to whitewash his legacy. Whatever evil he has done will probably be mostly forgotten by the tides of time and his legacy will be the charitable works he has done, even if some would argue his power and influence were ill-gotten. Like a modern day Rockefeller

I would go all the way back to Lee Iacocca. The taxpayers bailed out his company and he went on to become a huge American hero. And he more or less created the whole cult of the CEO that is still with us. It's kind of typical, many people thought to be successful have gotten there because of government subsidies and/or bailouts. And they're always the first to denounce the government.

Plenty of horrible people with insane beliefs never accompanied anything. These things may be exclusive

Jobs created some of the greatest products of the century. He didn’t get too much credit for that.

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time
