“Yes it was. It’s always funny the first time!”... you have to nudge them to get funnier, find their sense of humor, doesn’t matter if it’s not the same as yours. That’ll come!! My kids are 10 and 7 and now the’re getting to a point of being witty at times, and more insider jokes are building. Told my 10 Yr old that some guy must have known “Alexander”... she looked at me puzzled, told her about the writer Alexander Dumass... she got the joke and grinned... now she knows another way to call someone an idiot without ever saying it. :)
I will usually jokingly give an honest answer. “Well, that wasn’t really that funny,” or “what did you find funny about it?” If they’re proud of a joke then I wouldn’t kill their buzz, but if they’re doing something dumb and testing then worth reinforcing it isn’t hilarious.
