Rising Star
bcuz the high paying finance jobs often require you to come from a top undergraduate university (Ivy league) whereas the barrier to entry for accounting is magnitudes lower.
I decided to go into accounting due to versatility of the degree and I don’t regret it one bit. I’m now in a commercial banking role and I can tell you that having a strong knowledge in accounting fundamentals have helped me out more than putting me at a disadvantage. It’s not a lie when people say accounting majors can easily transfer over to finance role but the same can’t be said for finance majors.
I went to an average state school with a strong accounting program. The finance majors at my school usually ended up getting jobs selling insurance or some other related sales job. So for me, I didn’t really desire to major in finance. The better schools that I could get into were too expensive for me.
If I would have gone into something else it would have been data science, financial engineering, or financial modeling. Financial engineering is too much school and too much math though. Interesting, but not worth it to me.
I'm in finance now, started in accounting. Echo the sentiment that acctg -> finance is easier than finance-> accounting... the background def helps and to my surprise everyone respects my CPA designation.
With that said, the correct answer imo is double to major. I went into accounting bc i didn't think I could go into hard/ high end finance and the finance students at my school became salespeople. But there's tons of roles in finance that are outside of that.
I didn’t go to a top university, had only average grades, and didn’t have the ambition to work crazy hours assuming I could land the job. It’s a lot easier to be an average dude and succeed in this racket than it is to be a dude who gets a job and succeeds long-term in that one.
I didn't aim high and wanted more security
Ignorance
Security and the knowledge that I could go from accounting to finance with some effort. Working on it, but progress is being made
I preferred accounting, although I did better in my finance classes. In fact, one of my finance professors actually tried to convince me to switch majors lol
I liked The Accountant more than The Wolf of Wall Street
A 2.67 GPA could get me an accounting job (barely), but not a real finance job.
