What skills are needed to move to PE Ops? Would like to be a technology operating partner one day but don’t know how to get there.

Everything everyone above said is correct but I will add, you need to be a bit of a political animal if you’re going to rise to the rank of Operating Partner within the fund. Dealing with portfolio company leadership and personnel can be difficult, especially when there is a clash of visions or a lack of talent in a specific area required for strategic reasons.

Lastly, you have to put up results. In the end it all comes down to EBITDA and the exit multiple.

Less so on the modeling (that’s just the technical part), and more on understanding which financial and operational levers there are to pull, and when/how to execute said levers.

like

Most of this experience is earned on a case-by-case basis, with different situations and different external factors. So unfortunately, it’s really just getting the reps in executing growth strategies for the portcos, not just identifying the levers via CDDs (although, that skill is helpful too). It’s more of an art than a science.

Would it be hard to get a exp associate role in advisory at a B4 as someone with about 10 months in audit at EY, 7 months experience in corporate accounting at a F300 and CPA? Hated my time at the F300 but had thought the grass would be greener in industry. I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. I'm in desperate need of tips to get genuine buy in from our predominantly white, male senior leadership to create a more inclusive environment. As is often the case, middle management and below is very diverse and then at Director+ it gets much more homogeneous. So far any real initiatives get shot down in favor of performative actions to post on SM. Is this just how it is, or can we try something different?

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
