One group newspaper project my 10th graders enjoyed working on was turning fiction into fact. Groups of three read three different short stories then wrote three newspaper articles about the stories from the perspective of a journalist. Students were instructed to report the "facts" of what happened with optional interviews of the characters in the stories. Each student wrote one article but worked together editing each other's work as well as designing and creating their newspaper.
For midterms this year, I had the students choose a research topic from the memoir we read, and create a Slides project.
They got the rubric ahead of time, so they knew exactly what score they'd get. Easy on them, easy on me :)
Each year my students seem to really love using what we learned about narrative elements and how they interact/impact each other to write their own original works of science fiction.
I've gotten about 4 total who tried to write out the plot of a movie or show they like and get 0s for plagiarism, but most students do a really great job with this assignment.
