In college, studying advertising:
- Part time job at school newspaper selling classifieds ad space.
- Marketing Intern at a local magazine
- Marketing Intern at a “better” local magazine
- Part time account management intern at an agency
- (All of those internships were unpaid, so I also did paid part time jobs while interning like nannying)
Post college:
- Full time, paid media planning internship at a “better” agency
- Promoted to assistant media planner at same agency
- Went on to switch to account, only did media to get my foot in the door at that agency because it was the only job opening they had
This is why, when connections with zero advertising/agency experience reach out to me to refer them for senior agency roles, it always makes me laugh. You’ve gotta start at the bottom, or at least, respect what the people who did have learned from it.
Started as a client and built a strong relationship with the Group Account Director over a couple year. Then when I left my job, I asked for an interview and was brought in as an AE , and grew from there.
Post college, I landed my first agency gig as an AAE a couple of years ago during the hiring boom. The rest is history… And so is my job I was recently laid off 💀
But in college I took a brand ads course to fill up an extra credit in my minor, always wanted to break into advertising since.
Started in Business School and focused on Marketing but I didn't like the idea of being client side. It felt stifling and rigid based on all the conversations I had with alumni. Then I discovered advertising, and I wanted to be around the people who were selling things that consumers didn't need but made them feel better about themselves (not because I agreed with it but because there was a lot of psychology and strategy about people required to do that well.)
Found an internship at DDB, they placed me as a social media manager. They didn't have a spot for me coming out of that internship but I found an AAE position at McCann MRM and the job description lined up with my skills. I applied and stayed for about a year before moving to the next agency as an AE.
