Three years is a good chunk of time. I like to see people get promoted at an agency. Not just as a result of job hopping, although I do get that sometimes it needs to happen that way
Under a year at several jobs = I’m not pursuing the candidate most times.
That’s where I’m at right now, but I just got my first Jr job last October - was contract. And with the pandemic still in play, I’ve struggled to find anything full time. Have to take whatever freelance I can get.
I’d say year at a job is acceptable in our industry. You might be able to get away with one stint under a year, but any more than that you will cause alarm.
As far as thoughts and benefits, I honestly think job hopping (within reason) has many upsides. You learn how different agencies operate and function, you pick up projects that are outside of your wheelhouse and expand your experience, you grow your network, work on different accounts, etc. If you feel like you’ve capped at your current place and you can’t grow anymore, than it might be time to look elsewhere. I’d say jumping around while you’re young is probably a good thing because it’ll give you the experience to prepare for the next step in your career.
One other benefit (which I believe is not a very PC thing to say openly) is I find that my biggest raises came from leaving to another company. You don’t want to be only financially motivated, but it does play a huge role.
