Giving a gift to the newlyweds was the main one at my wedding. I was shocked how few guests gave us anything. Maybe 1/3 parties.
I am the one who rarely make a gift for the spouses, but to be fair few of my friends had a registry. In my circle, people tend to get married when they are established in their life and living together. I am myself getting married this year and I have no expectations of gifts. I feel like attending is already expensive enough (between travel, accommodation and outfits (+/- bachelorette parties). The reasoning that a gift should compensate for the price of inviting someone sounds very transactional to me, just don’t invite them.
