What's reasonable equity expectation range for Series B w.c. tech start-up at Director level (business role, base 200k). $40M total in capital raised through seed, A, & B. <150 employees.

200k is not a good deal honestly given the west coast . I would expect you to put your worth at additional 200k. Assuming you to last another 2 series with average 2x jump in valuation or use the industry benchmarks. Estimate your present worth and get the %equity you should need.

Your case: Base case potential value after 2 series in 2 years, let's assume 80M. Since you would be losing atleast 400k. That translates to around 0.5% equity base. Given exponential growth and risk, easily 1% can be discussed.

Again, 200k is very low for west coast life. 200k in Cal is 120-130k in Chicago

This is typical industry rule !

like

to be clear, 200k is the starting point of the base salary component of the offer not the total comp. plan to ask for more base depending on the nature of the variable package which I know nothing about yet. I know the base starting point from initial recruiter conversation but again, hasn't been negotiated with the company yet as not yet at that stage.

also, not sure what hat you're pulling 80m out of. they've raised 40m in capital currently, and valuation already higher than 80m based on estimates I've seen publicly.

Total YOE? Skills? Education? Location?

10+ total yoe, west coast as mentioned, T10 MBA, consulting and life skillz.

Following, only because I'm always interested in hearing how laughably low startup salaries are...

LOOOLL D1, good counter, got em

IC level, Series B, >70 employees.
Grant was like 0.05% or something, manager level grants are similar to this at my startup.

Op, unrelated question. What’s eligibility for a director level start up? I interviewed for a start up. It was for customer success manager.

definitely depends on the start-up and nature of the role. This one is a strong match in terms of background and client interaction whereas when making a bigger jump functionally it may be more difficult to get a title bump. Stage they're at matters too as I've looked at some senior manager level roles as well a bit for more mature startups with a lot more cash and high valuation.

The equity is pretty accurate, the cash seems a little low. This is from Jeff Busbang’s book. Find comps in your network and use this to negotiate?

Sry thought I did last night but it didn’t post: .1 - .3 %. I would get comps in your network as well. The accepted offers that I could find were roughly in line with this guidance.

I graduated college 2 years ago and started working on RIA in FL as a Research Analyst. During this period I got my series 65 and brought to the company two clients (total assets of $3M). This being said, I am not very happy with my compensation. I know I am just starting my career, and that I need patience. I will like to get other people insight on how can I grow and earn more $$
Should I get a Masters in Finance?
Should I start looking for a job in a BD instead if RIA?

A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I mean big big company is like 10x bigger than the small one if this was a factor. Assume everything else the same, WLB, commute, teams, etc.
