What’s the best way to prepare for a transition to a new company with a new in-house team and a new manager? I have two weeks before I start and trying to get a head start before my new work load piles up. Should I focus on refresher books, or courses for soft skills or technical skills? What may be helpful to think ahead of time for smooth integration once the roller coaster starts?

Learn everything you can about the company. Pull regulatory filings if they exist, read investor materials, research their history and product offerings. Come in knowing as much as you can so you can hit the ground running.

Spend time researching your new employer, but don’t go overboard. During a recent job transition, I took 5 PTO days to relax, reconnect with family/friends, and sleep! I felt refreshed and ready to go when I started my new role.

Read the company's press to try to figure out what they're proud of and how they brand themselves. Get a feel for how the execs talk by watching interviews.

And then...relax and take time to yourself so you can come in fresh.

Make sure in your first 2 weeks that you take the time to get to know your key internal clients and as many of the people on your team as you can...I require all my new hires to put 30 min meetings on the calendar of every person on the legal team, plus 4-5 of their key clients, to get to know them and how they view their role before jumping into any actual work streams.

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Any book recommendations on advanced procurement/sourcing concepts?

Most popular books I find such as 'Procurement and Supply Manager's Desk Reference' are not detailed/deep enough.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Does it matter as much as law school credentials? Assuming a mid-level corporate associate seeking to go in-house.

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.
