What’s the difference between staff attorney and counsel roles in-house? Saw one company with two roles where the only difference from what I could tell was essentially the titles.

I’d assume counsel is higher than staff but it’s likely company specific.

like

if there is no pay difference, who cares. if your role was legal janitor but you got paid 500k , you wouldnt care either

like

titles are moot so put the title that aligns with what ur employer put you down as, as long as your work experience is relevant. i was an assistant general counsel as a zero year but it didnt suddenly open doors

like

Counsel likely tasked with more complex or high-profile projects, may manage others, and is more experienced (generally or within the org). They prob have overlapping responsibilities if the legal team is flat, but the SA does the boring work and/or a higher volume of the easier stuff.

Hi everyone. I’m trying to transition from working at a non-profit to a more profitable position within research. My current title at my org is as a CR-assistant. Any suggestions of good transitional positions within clinical research? (That could be done remotely). Thank you!!

Hi fish,

Kindly consider this as most confused situation of my life and reply.

Does a non-tech PMO candidate can also achieve 30-50 LPA in just 5-6 years of experience as you technical people are achieving.

Please also suggest, should I continue in this PMO and go for PMP, Prince2 then try or just learn some technical things and then can only expect this much package?

How do you find in-house positions?

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

Maybe a dumb question for a lawyer, but is it normal to not be allowed to review an invention assignment agreement and post-employment restrictive covenant agreement at the offer letter stage? I’m told they can’t share prior to onboarding (I’ll be asked to sign them then) but I know I’m not going to sign some crazy non-compete so would like to see the drafts before accepting the offer.
