What's the hardest thing about moving from an individual performer to a leadership role? I'm about to take over my own team soon and I'm trying to shift my mindset.

Learning to let go - not just delegate, but make sure your team members have the space to do their work. You’re going from being the only person responsible for tasks being completed to being responsible for a team/team members contributing. It’s a weird feeling.

Totally agree with this! I think allowing people to make mistakes and do things their own way is hugely important. Micromanagers cause so many more problems than they solve.

Hiring and letting those bad performers go

Not being their friend anymore. That professional relationship doesn’t work anymore without re-establishing boundaries.

I agree with this. Its much easier when you weren't once their peer and then move to being their manager. However if you were their peer and now you are their boss, that can be a very hard transition to make. People do not like boundaries and unfortunately some people will try to press them over and over and you have to keep reinforcing them.

I struggle with the fact that my day and workload isn’t my own anymore? I might walk into the office in the AM with 10 must-dos, all with deadlines, but they all have to be pushed to the wayside so I can support my team. Same with my calendar. I don’t have nearly as much control or structure over how I spend my days.

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

Hi everyone!

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?
