I’ve worked at AT&T as a sales consultant for 6 years and 8 months where we prospect, uncover, and close on leads. I’ve used Salesforce for the past 4 years during my tenure. I’ve done B2B sales where I’ve received awards for it for 2 years consecutively. Loads of troubleshooting, uncovering needs through consultative styled selling, and tech app subscriptions.
I was wondering if I have the necessary skills to transition into a tech sales role. If so, what would be the best role/fit for me?Amazon Salesforce Google @

That is a personal choice for commissions only position. I wouldn't do it because if the company doesn't have enough faith in their product to pay a nice base salary why would I want to sell it?
I understand why startups do it, cash flow, but established companies that have the same exact product as their competitors? Just my opinion.
Its pretty simple. They want you to work for free.
I would not take a commission only job in this market place. It’s a no win for you!! The market is to volatile and no stability. Even with a base these days it’s tough!
Commission based only is padding my wallet FAT 🤑 it can be scary, but once you get the market share its defense & gravy
I’ve been on both sides. When I sold cars I was 100 percent commission and I did well so I agree but for a newby who has never been 100 percent commission it may be stressful
I believe it depends on the product or service you're selling. If it's a well respected company, or product, that people/businesses need, it can be a no brainier. Reputation sells itself. But if it's something they don't need, want, or initiate interest in, it can be a crap shoot. Too, I think the sales process the company has in place is key. Are you cold calling or getting warm leads? Or a mixture of both? Just my thoughts.
"Warm leads" from "marketing" lol I had to.
Commission only positions are typically from dead beat companies who do not have any faith in what they produce. They want you to do the cold calling, adding to their crm as you do, and if your initial enthusiasm generates sales, then great! They will pay whatever arguable, adjusted, commission they feel is appropriate. The amount of your commission is rarely ever what you expect based upon what you were promised. Now, in contrast to the fore mentioned poopville scenario, there is another shine one can appreciate. If you're young, just out if college or still in school, it can be a justifiable work experience. This positive scenario would especially be true if you had the chance to work in a field of your interest. Otherwise, get a job that pays you enough to live while you work to make the company happy they hired you.
Not worth the stress. If a company was profitable and had a product or service people desired and they were confident the sales numbers would be on par with their desire - they’d pay a BASE or salary + commission so they get a bigger piece of the pie. Commission only pads the owner and a handful of long term employees. But for me the stress far outweighs any upside.
It’s not new at all. Companies have been doing it for decades. I won’t even consider a position if it doesn’t have its base pay listed. This tells me they are either not paying a base or the base is way too low to list. Not worth my time to apply.
It's popular in industries with hundreds of pop up companies(roofing, solar, etc) that can't guarantee business and sales. Outside of those industries I'd absolutely stay away from it.
If a company doesn't do enough consistent business to guarantee their employees a base pay then they're not a company built to last or one that will care about your success beyond what you can do for them.

It’s like telling you your time is worth nothing to them. How can you ever feel like you’re appreciated at a commission only job? My base and the merit raise I get is what makes me feel like I’m valued.
You might as well start your own business and take 100% risk straight commission is no longer apply in a lot of sales job. The competition is too much. Your profit margins are low and then some company want to pay your commission once a month I say no way baby.
It was historically a thing, took a swing down during recent years, but I'm sure with the tough economic conditions some companies want to get away with it
They exist because desperate suckers will still sign up to work essentially for free. It's huge risk and I would never stoop to that level.
It's not new at all. Many smaller companies and startups are seeing it as an easy way to lower their overhead before they truly build a successful customer base in the market. Yes, you can make a lot of money at the right company, but you need to be at the top of the game.
I have been in sales for over 20 years and never have I ever taken an ‘only comm ‘ position . Why would I ? I’m not worth a salary too ? I will never work for anyone for free and that’s exactly what you’re doing on an only comm position .
I must agree with you. I’ve been in sales a very, very long time. Must be about 35 years now and I have never taken a commission only position. You feel like you’re working for free that’s the character dangling to keep you going so that you’re not feeling that any longer. Job market is awful right now.

Yeaaa I won’t ever recommend commission only because how are you doing your monthly budget? Truly 😭
It’s hard specially if the company you work is delusional and thinks their products are the next big thing which most are usually when it’s a big company they’ll offer at least minimum wage
Most companies should pay out until you get your business running smoothly
Commission only can be very lucrative if you have the right network!
As a top producer in sales I will say the stress and corporate being able to fire you and replace you on the dime is not worth it.
My theory is if you are on a hourly salary the motivation and strive to go above n beyond for that extra money isn’t their I did notice a lot of sales job switching to commission I’m guessing due to employee performance if you are only being paid in commission you have to constantly make sure your putting in effort to get leads and close them not only that I’m guessing is shows the company who has better work ethic then others
