Donât tel anyone youâre a mom until you start the job. People donât volunteer that they donât have kids or theyâre married, why do we do it as moms? Also, flexibility is so key.
1. Donât think of yourself as a mom interviewing. Youâre a candidate with unique value to bring to the table.
2. If you have to HIDE that youâre a mom, itâs probably not going to be a place you want to work. I always think itâs helpful to ask to meet with folks doing the job today to ask about work life balance and to ask the hiring manager about how the deal with after hours needs, etc.
When I moved to my current role I had a 4 year old with complex health needs and I knew I was only ever going to work part time and that her health came first. I was totally upfront about it. Explained that Iâd been working part time and partially offsite for years successfully and was confident I could do the role in those parameters. I laid out my preferred work schedule and didnât negotiate against myself with âif that works for youâ language. The rest is history.
Wishing you lots of luck!
I disagree with above poster. However, if it comes up organically itâs best. Usually a good working environment recognizes we have lives and other priorities. Just know what you need and come prepared to ask for it. Think about where your child is now vs where they will be in a year and try and think about scheduling and flexibility needs in the near term. I have a 16 month old. When I started my job she just turned one. We tried to have part time help at home and we donât. So long as work gets done, well, and on time, everything else is gravy.
I was very upfront that I have a young child and nobody cared. They wanted pictures or saw it as a way to bond with various new teammates.
Unsure if this is helpful, but it depends on how old your child is, if you plan on having more, etc.
