When someone asks what compensation range you are looking for to prompt a move... what is an appropriate answer to this?

This is a trick that companies use to pay less. Do not fall for it. Instead an answer such as "I'm seeking a wage commensurate with what the market offers for a comparable position for someone with my skill level". Basically make them throw out a number first before you give yours. They're a company win a budget and they know what they have budgeted to spend on the position. No sense in negotiating against yourself.

like

Or you say something like "If it gets to that point, I'd love to hear what your offer is and we can negotiate from there". They will respect you for not negotiating against yourself and if they actually like you and see value in you, this won't be looked at as a negative.

like

I just am a firm believer that people trust strength. Negotiating against yourself is a weakness. Now don't get me wrong, you want to be totally polite and professional the entire time, but f you're good and you're valuable I don't think someone will hold it against you.

like

Ask for what you want? They're likely going to want compensation history so it might be hard to justify anything too extreme. The higher the level the bigger percentage increase I'd ask for.

I give a slightly higher broad range like "mid to high 80s". But I do some research to make sure it backs up my numbers. Every time I've changed jobs I look for 10-15% more. I start off a little higher that way I don't get too disappointed when the counter with something lower.

Always be cordial and polite, but I generally give a vague response along the lines of what I stated above and then I'll come back with "what is the company budgeting for this position".

If you give them the first number you'll never get more than that even if they had planned on paying more. Salary negotiation 101. As a business I plan on paying 100k you say you want mid to high 80s then I'm only offering low 80s to start.

Agreed. But when they simply refuse to tell you their budget you got to be prepared. You can't just stonewall another wall and just say "whatever the market demands"

@BDO1 that's when you tell them to make you an offer, as you fundamentally believe against negotiating against yourself. If they're unwilling to do this, then rethink whether you want to work for this company.

Yeah. Guess you really have to gauge the situation. Would you also apply this when there's a contracted recruiter intermediary?

^Depends on whether the recruiter is on your side or not. Generally the recruiter is on your side so you discuss total salary ranges. They know the deal and how to negotiate. When using a recruiter you really have to find one you trust.

I've had recruiters ask me this. Never really know how to answer.
