CTC: 15 LPA fixed
Hello, what is working in retail banking like at JPMorgan Chase ? Specially the branch manager role. I’m looking in the Columbus area. How is pay, culture, benefits, sales environment, meetings, etc. How easy is it to transition from retail banking to corporate. I hear the Polaris campus has great opportunities, I was thinking about getting my foot in the door through retail then transferring to corporate ?

No, you need to negotiate before, self-promote before, advocate for yourself before. By the time the org has gone through the process of figuring out what to give you, their salary budget is already allocated across the whole team.
exactly. before, not after. very little room after. too late for you.
I'm shocked at the answers. Yes you should always negotiate your pay if it involves change in responsibilities. Getting a raise for doing a good job isn't the same as being promoted to a higher position which automatically means you should inquire and try to negotiate the pay increase. I've always negotiated my salary increase for a promotion. It's not smart not to at least try.
@CD1 yeah that specific example is pretty bad - I've seen a spectrum as well because humans but outside of that, always know and negotiate your worth.

Can’t relate.
Same. I was just curious in case it happens. Keyword: in case.
I was promoted and given a raise a few months ago, however both the title and salary were far lower than I was expecting based on my new job responsibilities. I thanked them and told them that I appreciated their confidence in me, but that I didn't think that title or compensation was adequate for the responsibilities I was taking on. I told them that based on my research, I should be making 20-30k more than they were offering, and that I wanted to negotiate for more. I also told them that I would be more okay with the salary if there was at least a guarantee that there would be another review within 6 months where I could negotiate for another raise, but that I didn't feel that it was fair to ask me to take on a much more significant role with only a tiny increase in pay, (especially since, given the nature of the business, if I were to be laid off due to losing the client within the next year, that I'd essentially done that work and gotten nothing in return to show for it). they were understanding and came back with an additional 10k, with a promise of another review in 6 months where I could again negotiate for more money.
I showed them proof, but also pointed out that the level they hired me at was two full levels lower than the work and responsibilities I was doing, and that I had also taken the job at a pay cut from my previous job. the raise they had initially offered would have put me at the same pay I'd been at previously, but I'd be doing way more work. when I was hired, I'd just gotten laid off and didn't know how long another offer would take to come through. I told them that as much as I loved working there, I wouldn't have accepted how low my starting pay was if I'd have known how much I'd actually be doing, and so I didn't think it was fair to base my raise off of my starting salary given that the starting salary was for a job with far fewer responsibilities than I'd actually been performing. I also knew they couldn't find someone to do the job for less than what I was asking.
The proper response is thank you.
u must be male
The times I have gotten that news, it’s been with an apology. Something like you are getting a raise but it’s tiny, some people aren’t getting a raise, so you should be grateful. Blah. Blah. Blah. No room for discussion. Best way to get the big raise is to move to another agency.
Yes, why not? If the organization can hire someone outside and negotiate their salary, why not yours? If you’re considered for a promotion you already know they value your work. Know what you’re worth and ask for it!
Only if you are prepared to resign and leave
Always negotiate. Worst they can say is no. I just had the same scenario and negotiated a 100% increase on the pay-rise. Never take the first offer. My mind is blown by the responses on this thread
Nope
I guess it’s why you haven’t called me in your office yet
People do it all the time. It’s common to say what you were hoping for in an increase.
Say thank you. Set your goals. And negotiate for a bonus.Incentive based income is possible. They may not buy it but at least they know you are willing to commit and it is more likely they will invest in you.
OP I just went through the same thing. Already got a promotion but was waitlisted on pay raise. Never discussed with the powers at be what that number was gonna be. Had no idea. Found out via email that it was approved and ready to take affect. Felt really happy with the number but also a little bit of ‘why that number?’ It’s definitely fair but also probably mid market value if I were to be accepting a new job. So many articles said you’re expected to try and negotiate so my partner and I planted the seed but I’m pretty sure it’s just gonna be a “that’s the cap budget” which is fine. Still not sure if asking was the right thing to do but the worst that can happen is hearing “No.” I hope 🤞
Also- are youuuh my partner, lol?
Hey partner, i mean CW1. So how did it go for you? Any updates when you and your partner did ask for some more? How did you justify it?
I was promoted and given an a raise. I didn’t think the raise was enough and negotiated an additional $15k in my salary and $10k additional annual bonus.
How did you justify that additional 15 and 10? Is it based on the responsibilities you had in previous months? As a mid-level creative in startup, I couldn’t think of anything besides that would actually justify negotiating for more.
If you feel the number you’re shown doesn’t match to the value you bring, I think it’s totally fair to negotiate with strong rationale in reasonable relation to market factors. Don’t just push for a number arbitrarily - it should be correlated. That way, if the answer is no, you can be clear on where you stand.
If anyone wants an update. Just want to say thanks for all the insights. Boss took notice of my hard work and is appreciative of the value I bring. Will get an increase that is far more money that I would get had I said the number first. I did it. It’s taking effect next month. You can do this kids. Keep dreaming. Sksksksks and I oop!
Thank you! That is so true. It was my first experience to undergo an intense performance review and it was enlightening. I think your instinct should probably be your lower limit, at least! Yes, go get it women!
I’m fortunate my boss explained to me why this and that and what my pay could get moving forward. And I was taken aback on how big it could get. Of course YMMV. It all depends on where you are and the agency but yes, believe in your ability and the value you bring to the agency. I wish you folks the best.
No
I actually am shocked people are saying no. Negotiate. They have not given you the highest raise possible - it’s still a business. It’s never too late. Those who don’t negotiate will lose major money over the course of their career.
My boss mentioned it to me few months ago but I was so anxious I never said any figure or what have you. But the fact that we had a conversation around it, I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask for more should the time come?
Just wanna jump on here a little late: Currently up for a promotion and should be hearing about it soon but haven't even remotely discussed any $ numbers yet. I have a number in my head that I get the feeling will be higher than what I'm offered. Do I bring it up before the actual update/news or do I wait until the promotion actually comes.
CD: We’d like to give you a raise and promotion!
AD: I’d like more money
