Depends on the level I was at. As a staff no. As a senior I knew my manager would respond because I would touch base with them before PTO and confirmed that they’d respond. As a manager I did the responding.
Chief
As a manager, I still won’t respond. Thats the only way to live a healthy life
It’s client service - you reply no matter what.
Maybe if you are at a high level of a company, sure. But if you have a boss, then hell no. You don't have the responsibilities that a high level person does. As long as the client is aware that you are gone on PTO, its not an issue.
Depends. You don’t need to be available for your clients on PTO, but there is an expectation to have an out of office or to wrap up/give status update before PTO. If the client was expecting something from you and you just disappear that’s bad. If something came out of nowhere, there is no expectation to answer if they see your out of office email (unless your manager and above).
Yeah couldnt have said this any better.
Nope, before any PTO longer than a day, I let all my clients know I'll be away, set up a point of contact for them while I'm away, and make sure I put up my OOO. I work way too many hours during the year and need to disconnect 100% while on vacation. I even tell my team to only call me if the building burns down so I don't waste my time driving to an office that no longer exists.
No, most of the time I don't respond while on PTO. Unless there is something really pressing and I haven't set anyone else from the team up to cover.
In my opinion your manager should've probably been the one to respond while you were out. This kind of stuff is the reason more people aren't going into accounting.
No - don’t respond. But I also say on my OOO that I have very limited or no access to email and if they have an accounting emergency, to reach out to another team member
Exactly - using that term helps get the point across
I do not answer emails while on PTO. I feel that what we do is not brain surgery or anything life threatening, so it can wait until I return. I always send an email the week before I am out and who to contact if something immediate is needed.
It's important to set expectations early so you don't work yourself to death. There are no protections for salaried employees.
Yes. You dont have to work but you have to let them know that youre currently out and when they could expect the answer.
Being ghosted isnt fun, especially when theyre paying thousands of dollars for your time.
A big fat no. I’m not being paid to work when I’m in vacation. There’s a reason for having coverage while you’re out- you can communicate with clients that you’re OOO between these dates & so & so on your team is covering for you and more than happy to answer any questions they may have. You can also provide what is needed early or let them know that whatever they need can be provided when you return
Your team should pick up the slack. But it all comes down to communication. Idc if you’re a partner or associate. You communicate protected time off and the rest of the team jumps in to cover. Forward emails to the person who is closest in rank to you and forget about it. It’s unfortunate if that’s not the case.
Absolutely. Money never sleeps.
Did you not set up OOO email responses or did your client just ignore it and wait on their ass until you came back?
Im guessing they’re a new senior associate who didn’t set up OOO or answer any emails asking the status. However their manager could have replied that it’ll be handled next week upon return (what I do if it can wait)
Lol no
I monitor, but a response depends on how urgent it seems. But I do let all of my clients know I’ll be on PTO and give them contact options if they can’t wait until I return. They’re usually pretty respectful of the PTO.
i am interested
You don’t have to.
I always let me key clients know that I was leaving and returning so it never was an issue. If it was an emergency they always knew they could call but more often then not that never happened. Plus they always knew who else they could call on the team.
Once we had smart phones (and in the old days, blackberries) it was easy to keep up for thirty minutes in the morning and in the evening if necessary. I’m in the client service business and coming back to hundreds of unopened emails was not something I wanted to deal with
Plus a well written OOO is always the first line of defense
Use th out of the office notification and nope.
Did you have an out of office message up that stated how long you'd be out and who they should reach out to if they needed a response before that date? If there was a pressing deadline, did you make sure all interested parties knew you'd be out and make sure things would be covered while you were gone? Other than that, nope, no response needed.
