Depends on the level I was at. As a staff no. As a senior I knew my manager would respond because I would touch base with them before PTO and confirmed that they’d respond. As a manager I did the responding.

As a manager, I still won’t respond. Thats the only way to live a healthy life
It’s client service - you reply no matter what.
Maybe if you are at a high level of a company, sure. But if you have a boss, then hell no. You don't have the responsibilities that a high level person does. As long as the client is aware that you are gone on PTO, its not an issue.
I generally won’t respond when I’m on PTO. I almost never take more than 4-5 days at a time, often less. And I let team members, and any clients I’m actively working with know ahead of time. I don’t take time off during busy season/periods. But when I’m on PTO, I’m not responding to emails and honestly rarely even look at them. I’m not a surgeon. No one is dying if I don’t respond immediately. And it helps me relax and recharge. I don’t want to set the precedent that I’m available when I’m out. Now if I were going to be out for like 2 straight weeks, I’d probably try to respond to emails at least once or twice in that period. But otherwise—set some boundaries and run from a company that doesn’t respect that.
i may turn on a laptop and respond promptly to email from my client for questioning anything relating to the engagement, anytime, anywhere.
may? you mean MUST
If you are a staff accountant, its ridiculous for your supervisor to say that you should be available for your clients when on PTO. That being said, if you do take PTO, you should make sure that any clients you interact with know you are on PTO. Usually an out of office message for your email does the trick.
I do not look at email while I'm on vaca. However I typically include a brief list of who to contact about what in my OOO auto-reply after checking with these people to make sure they're OK handing these things while I'm away. I don't have external clients, so only internal co-workers in other depts see/use this contact info.
When I'm on PTO, I don't even know what email is. lol Don't feel guilty. That is your paid time OFF from work. You've earned it. Don't waste it with Outlook and Excel.
Absolutely not even as a manager. I give so much time Paid Time Off is to take time completely off. Let’s normalize this!
