Job titles aren’t consistent in the industry. A “Director” one place may not be the same in another. Also, responsibilities at one company won’t be the same at another. Those collectively is creating the disparity you reference. Company A may want someone that can do something end to end, manage multiple aspects of the job, manage a large team, etc. Where Company B just wants someone that can do one piece of the process with no direct reports. They clearly wouldn’t pay the same for these roles, but they may both be titled as Director.
I’ve had plenty of clients who think they can get that and have to adjust their request later. It could be that they heard someone say 8 years experience and someone else told them the budget.
Or they just don’t want to fill the position. Like the guy who lists his tiny boat for $150k and then tells his wife “I’m trying to sell it but it’s just a tough market.”
