Why is this industry obsessed with “30 under 30” and “40 under 40” when there are almost no 50 year olds left after the political gauntlet and yearly layoffs? What an awful industry to be 40-something and 25 years left in a career. Enough with this age bias Adweek and AdAge. Enough! I want to see rockstars fucking killing it in their 60s in advertising. You’d be lucky to find 20 people left. Fix this systemic ageism.

The ageism conversation goes both ways cos the older creatives I've worked with at 3 shops: say Twitter is trash, don't use instagram and are hoping tiktok gets banned so they don't have to worry about it. I believe everyone is of value but it feels like both sides need to come to the table with humility. Even the teacher learns.

likehelpful

This is a false dichotomy because from what I can tell, it’s the obtuse “older creatives” (and future iterations of these still in their youth) who think being young is necessary for the business.

This makes sense when you think about it though because their ignorance and lack of interest in learning new things are what they assume everyone their age and older share.

Most young creatives appreciate talented older creatives as mentors.

This business was, and always will be for the young. I was warned when I was in college that 50 would be the end and somehow I’d need to bridge the next 15 years to 65 for medicare and social security... but I never thought I’d still be here this long. Now, well... I guess I’m screwed. I hope you succeed with this cause. In the meantime can you spare some change?

like

Also, people over 40 cost more money and tend to have a stronger grasp on work/life balance. As agencies and holding cos. continue to squeeze and squeeze, older talent will be replaced for cheaper, more naive — and not necessarily better — talent.

like

Here lies the problem- agencies have plenty of $$ for salaries and freelance. Juicing the orange is part of the game for any business. But experience and tenured people have some incredible talents not found with those with 5-8 years in the business. So as a creative agency, would you not want a bigger juicer orange to juice? You’ll get a hell of a lot more of the good stuff from them.

Plenty of people make it to 60. They are c suite. Global c suite. Big agency ECD. Founders and owners. Essentially, they are survivors, who now make enough money to not have to work as long as the average person. This is a cut throat game. It’s not easy, and it’s not supposed to be.

likesmart

Wow...I thought you were going to end this rant with “this is Thunderdome!” I agree that most business is cut throat, but if this is the case, this industry needs to immediately chill on the human touchy feely Brene Brown bullshit rhetoric. I’ve seen way too many talented 40+ people forced out because they just wanted to use their experience and wisdom to do good work, but didn’t want to live the life of an advertising C-Suiter.

likesmart

It really depends on which department. Creatives? Yes. Other departments definitely have people who can last longer as those departments value experience over the next, new shiny thing. I’ve seen people working so long in other departments that they were collecting social security, too.

likesmart

Yes, there are shitty people that just think they know everything and don’t give a shit to where the world is going right now. But these are the the majority.

I think there are awesome people at their 50s and 60s, with such a humble attitude, hunger for learning and having new experiences. And we have to stop the bias against these people. The best Art Director I know in NY is on his 50s and no kid can do what he does.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

If there were no practical obstacles whatsoever, what area(s) of law OTHER than your current practice area would you want to explore, and why?

I’ve been so specialized for so long I’m not even sure how to answer this question for myself. Once upon a time I was somewhat interested in tax but I’m worried that’s where fun goes to die. I kinda dig admin law, although that’s cheating a bit because I work with a federal agency.

I have a third round interview this Thursday, but after I sent my availability, I booked a flight for work that is causing a problem. The interview ended up scheduled for 3:30-4:15, and I'm supposed to be on a 5pm flight out of LGA. Is there a reliably quiet place at LGA to do the interview (I don't have lounge access)? Would it be a bad idea to say my availability changed and I can't do that time slot anymore? Or should I cancel / rebook my flight to later at night?
