Will big law firms throw you a small bonus even if you're hundreds of hours under target?

LOL! Hope not. I think my work product is decent and I don't turn down work but deal work dried up in the summer.

like

If you consider severance to be a bonus, then yes, you may get a bonus.

funny

I once missed by ten hours. No bonus.

like

Wow that is cold….

like

Its called a bonus for a reason, regardless of the work drying up is on you or not.

like

My firm has separate discretionary bonuses for people. You can receive them if you’re under the threshold for normal bonus. Usually smaller like $5k first year, $10k for 2-4th, etc

like

Quinn Emanuel. They’ll throw you $1k, and you still get the profit sharing.

They’ll also round your hours up if you’re close enough to the threshold. And give you 50% bonus for being 100 hours lower.

like

At most firms, usually no, absent special circumstances (like hundreds of hours spent on a pro bono trial, when your firm has a pro bono cap).

like

Thank you! I didn't know if some nominal amount ($1-5k) was typical. Oh well.

They’ll throw you out a window

In most firms you must meet the minimum billable threshold to be eligible for any bonus. Even if you’re slightly under, too bad.

My firm has additional small bonuses for associates for non-billable firm contributions. These have to be specifically applied for with a description of your contributions that merit the bonus. May be worth checking if your firm has anything similar.

At my first BigLaw firm, they essentially had pro-rated bonuses if you missed hours. I was under by several hundred hours and still got $5k (as a second year). At my current firm, the minimum billable number is a bright line.

My firm does pro rated bonus if below the minimum but only above a minimal threshold (which I imagine is above 1700-1800).

Go on a hunger strike for pro rated bonuses!!

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)
