With the market kinda tanking lately, is now (late December) a good time to break into the market and buy a few various stocks?

If I could figure out the best time to buy stocks I wouldn’t be sitting here on client site. You can’t time the market. Better people have tried. Just invest the same amount every month. Look up “dollar cost averaging”

Your guess is as good as ours or any coin flip. It can either go up or down.

"a few various stocks" is speculating not investing. Read Ben Graham's Intelligent Investor.

It’s always a good time

Look up time series analysis and random walk .. that’s what the stock market is .. a random walk

The best time to buy the market (NOT INDIVIDUAL STOCKS!!! EVER!!!) was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

You're not smarter or better informed than the people who work on wall street who's literal job it is to be well informed on this stuff. Also, they suck at it.

Buy market index funds and hold till you retire. Boring? Yes. Effective? For sure. Then go out and do something else with your free time.

Home reno financing question. Have a big project coming up in the $120-150k range. Funding sources are:
- 90k from a heloc around prime
- 10k from a credit card that offers promo checks at 2-3% for 12-18 months
- 375k in a brokerage
- 5-6k per month cash that I can put towards the project, loans, or brokerage

I don't want to stop funding the brokerage because my FIRE plan is less numbers based than "hoard like dragon until it's enough" but maybe I should... How would you optimize?

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.
