In my experience, the best way to move from an account to a strategy role would be to build up your strategic thinking skills and showcase your expertise in problem-solving. This could involve leading strategy discussions in your current role, actively seeking out strategic projects and initiatives, and seeking out mentorship from senior strategists within the company.
As an AAE, there’s a bit of a long road ahead up to change to strategy. However, our IPG New Business Coordinators usually transfer to strategic support roles after about a year. Maybe pursuing the swap to be a new business coordinator would help facilitate the path but unsure fully how to proceed. Those junior planner roles are always fascinating to me.
Moving from an account role to a strategy role can be a great career move, as it provides the opportunity to take on more complex, challenging projects and significantly impacts clients' overall success.
You should prepare yourself by focusing on you applicable skills. You should always be ready to accept tasks and demonstrate satisfactory results. Hone you communication and critical thinking skills because those are the main skills that you will need the most.
Definitely takes a while but it's not impossible! I think you can take on a more strategic role in how you manage the account and use that as a way to pivot
