Working with headhunters that specialize in consulting outplacement: how do THEIR incentives work?

Like, I assume that they are paid based on the level of the candidate that they bring in, but how are their incentives ALIGNED? If you as the candidate get a higher comp package, do they get a higher placement fee? Or is it in their best interest to keep your comp within (i.e., below) a certain range?

Can you name a few such head hunters ?

They do want you to get higher pay, but secondary to you getting hired. They don't get anything if you are out of the pay band/range of the position and don't accept/get offered the position. They tend to try and keep you in the range the hiring manager expressed. Watch out for salary coaching advice, as this is a big sign that they are trying to fit you in a position that does not pay as much as you might want.

I've heard x months or a year salary depending on level of course. Not certain though.

So that arrangement would suggest that the headhunters' interests are aligned with the candidates'... i.e., the more you get, the more they make, which sounds great to me as a potential candidate...but I also know they DON'T represent my interests, only their firm's interests, so that's why I wondered if there might be some other sort of arrangement that keeps their incentives more aligned with the hiring firm's.

Getting you a few extra bucks is worth less to them than turning over the search rapidly.

They very likely could be getting a flat rate with x percent of people placed else they lose the contract.

@D, Interested here. Can you share contacts?

My headhunter was a predator. He flexed so I had to nuke his spacecraft.

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?

I am expecting an offer from Master Card for Senior Software Engineer position in O Fallon MO. Please let me know what kind of base salary I can expect with 11 yrs experience . I don’t wanna undersell but also trying to avoid being aggressive but quote a decent number which will be achievable. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Is 125k $ base a fair value for or I can pitch higher? They have a 15 to 20 % bonus on top of base pay and a 10% match on 401k which the recruiter keep highlighting.

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
