Worried about the cost of travel and socializing during MBA. How have you been able to find a balance with budgeting and still going out and not being the “poor” one? I’m first gen and don’t come from a wealthy family

You’re already in debt - what’s a few more thousands in the hole.

Also first-gen and was still paying off undergrad student loans when I started my MBA. I took one big international trip during my 1st year and that was enough to create lifelong memories. Otherwise I was able to avoid most of the expensive travel and catch up with class mates at local events without feeling pressure to continue to spend on so many trips.

like

I’m planning to take 0 trips 😂

I mean that’s what loans are for. If you’re taking 2 years off work to do a full-time one of the outcomes better be a significant improvement in earning power after. Taking out $10k more to enjoy yourself when you’re already taking out over $100k (assuming no grants / scholarships) is a drop in the bucket.

I had right at $100k when I graduated and I’m about to pay it off 5 years in. Could have done it a lot sooner had we not been saving up for a house.

And you can still do those things in moderation, doesn’t mean you have to go out every night or travel every weekend. There will be plenty of opportunities to socialize during recruiting events, club meetings, etc which usually have food and drinks covered.

Yeah for sure

What’s the problem with being seen as “poor”? :) If you are in a 2Y program, you can wait till your internship is over to spend on trips. Socialising otherwise doesn’t cost as much and you can always stick to a budget that works for you - this would mean skipping out on some events while going to others. Having done this quite a bit myself, I can promise you no one will exclude you!

So buy one drink and sip slowly

You know most places around the world aren’t as expensive as NYC. You can go to cool places without breaking a bank. Just stick with hostels and take public transits when traveling abroad, and it would be cheaper than staying in NYC.

Confused as to when to jump from consulting. I joined a T2 consulting firm after MBA and working from 9 months but the job made me anxious and personal health took a hit. I'm also concerned about exits from CEO's office roles, what do they look like?
