you can always go back to consulting if you don't like it. It's way easier to move back to consulting from there than the other way around
I say go for it! 🙌🏽 live your dream
If the money is not an issue and this if your dream path, then go
Do it
If it’s something you have always wanted definitely do it
You will know in 1 year’s time if you like it or not; if you don’t you can come back to consulting.
Pls do it for all of us who wish we had taken such a step.
Rooting for you
Further context - I love my employer, team, client, supervisor, and functional area. I am in a niche area that is very satifying, respected, and desirable (for the industry) and it took a ton of work to get here. The Foreign Service (re)offer came out of the blue recently and is based on my skills and performance 5 years ago so feels a little weird to be going back to it and accepting the massive paycut. It still is a lifelong dream, so it's a tough choice as I currently have a good 'bird in the hand.'
You can always come back, and probably at an even higher salary & level, given the new skills and experience you’ll have. And the earlier poster was correct about the financials - depending on where you end up, you’ll probably come out ahead financially. All of my friends who have been in the FS have.

“Lifelong dream” is all we needed to hear. Go forth and prosper my friend.
It'll be a great adventure. I have a lot of friends at USAID. Go for it!

Go for it! You can always come back or move somewhere else after FS if you don’t love it - whether in govt or private sector. It’s super tough to land a spot too, so congrats!!!
Thanks! I was told it was the most conpetitive intake in agency history, so I guess my motivation showed!

OP I just want to say I didn't know of a position like this and I am now very intrigued as well, so thank you for posting about it.
Op did you take it or not?
Reach out to friends/contacts in the Foreign Service as it’s changed due to lack of coherent policies and unpopular stances globally. Friends just left for their 3rd posting and were fed up with life in DC...
I've heard these rumblings. Been pleased with overall stability of Booz as a company so cautious about making any moves involving a paycut.
Foreign Service is my dream as well. You have the chance, go for it!

I was military for six years. I was set to go to an Ivy on a baseball scholarship and gave it up. Delayed my life so I could do all the high speed stuff, see the world, go the hardest schools - I regret none of it, miss it all the time. Do it. You won’t regret it. The foreign service has great people, awesome experiences. Life is short, be happy!
OP I am starting to study for the FSOT and hoping to take (and pass!) it in February. This is also my dream job - I hope you go for it!
Mind my ignorance, but it doesn’t seem like you had much growth potential in ur current role as a staff aug role anyways... so move
Also they should be providing housing and you'd likely be moving to a much lower cost of living country so it's not really a pay cut in that sense.
@ associate1 Thanks! I have expatriate options with Booz that would also pay housing + dramatically better tax benefits than for a government employee so would actually make far more on my current track.
I have roughly your same job. My parents have (roughly) the job you’re looking at. I make more money at my age than they did (accounting for inflation). However, I have never, and likely will never meet anyone who has had a more fascinating, eye-opening or story filled career as they’ve had. I got to grow up overseas, go to international schools, and see the world in a way most young kids will never get to. By the end of their careers they worked in some of the most senior positions in government, had the most incredible career arcs you could imagine. Yeah, maybe you could become a partner somewhere, have the country club, beach house, etc. But when you get to say “Yeah I had cigars with Foreign Minister XYZ over a bonfire at XYZ outpost back in the day” as just one of 1,000 such unique stories, there’s just a different level of career satisfaction and impact. Go for it, I don’t think you’ll regret it.
Do it! I came from international development to a staff aug role. I’d go back abroad if I had the chance.
You get allowances in FS and don’t pay income taxes if you spend the year abroad. If you compare total post-tax compensation you may not be giving up much money.
D3 I feel like you can. I was briefly considering an intl position with Booz and HR mentioned that (along with reducing my salary). There must be a loophole or special requirement that kicks in. This was under the old tax law, not sure if that makes a difference.
I say take it, I would in a heartbeat. Foreign service is what I’d like to be doing as well.
