If they’re good at their job, they’re good at their job. Those who’d care despite that assumption are driven by ego.
"Work under and take orders from" sounds like a juvenile interpretation of a manager + direct report relationship. Perhaps you should unpack that.
Seriously. I don't have much issue with someone *younger* than me, but I'd probably take umbrage with someone with far less experience
Nope. B/c experience is priceless. No matter how smart or talented you are, you can’t replace experience with textbook theory.
Rising Star
32 vs 26?
Depends on if their maturity level matches or exceeds their age. If they’re immature, it’ll be hard for me to adjust. Also years of experience plays a part, if I have more years of experience than them, then I’m not sure I can get value by reporting to them.
Would you apply/take a position knowing you would work under & follow someone who throws their tenure in your face all the time?
Why or why not 👇
Rising Star
Yes because advertising is ageist and everyone is under 30
Younger would not bother me, the things that bother me in a boss have nothing to do with age. However, I will say I think the qualities that bother me in a boss could be more likely to exist in a less experienced person because some things you learn through direct experiences. Age in and of itself would matter very, very little to me though.
Rising Star
How much younger?
Not yet, I’m only 3.5 years out of undergrad and I want to have great mentors. I’m 25, someone younger can’t give me substantial career advice.
Depends on their credentials. If they got there because they’re that good. Yes. If they got there because they cheated there way to the top, no. I know me and I would eventually resent it and become frustrated and it would show in my work.
I switched careers in my late 20s, so it's natural for people to be younger and a little ahead.
However, if I'd been in advertising the whole time and I just had to face up to the fact that someone younger than me is so much better than me that they deserve to be above me? I'm not going to lie. It would hurt like hell, every single day.
Yes. Because eventually you will be the oldest person in the room and you will run out of bosses.
I got into this industry relatively late, and my senior was 2 years younger. She was awesome.
I mean, just look at the Bumble CEO. Enough said. Age is just a number.
Not if they do good work.
Unless their parent runs the company.
Then, no.
But still maybe, if their work is good. 🤔
No I wouldn't. If they're capable and professional and can lead a team to success, I don't care. Ageism goes both ways.
I have been a VP/dept head for a few years and I’m in my mid 30s. I’ve had plenty of people older than me report into me and it’s never been an issue. For anyone that would question my experience or expertise based on age, I wouldn’t want on my team anyway.
It’s irrelevant it’s about the actual persons talent and skill level.
However, there are plenty of people promoted for reasons other that skill and it causes talent churn for no good reason
The issue however is not about age per se but what have you done by “a younger than average age”
You have to remember certain skills come with time (look who goes into meetings if the client is going to fire the agency - it’s never a young person!)
I’m early 30s with a very sizeable team that support me and enough battle scars whereas you’ll be hard pressed to get that experience as a younger person
Sure, as long as they don't try to tell me I'm uncool for having a middle part, wearing skinny jeans, or using 😂 emojis.
I am younger than someone I manage - it’s dependent on a few things. Some people don’t have the desire for management Bs. If they do, if they are good at their job and a good manager, I don’t really think it matters!
It also depends on the company structure and market type...with the fast changing pace of many technology fields I’ve worked under folks younger than me often, mainly because I love the deep technical work and not so much the management aspect. There has to be a respect between the roles and understanding that years of experience and staying current with new technologies vs. management experience/guidance each play a part in. To some degree ageism can happen both directions, so it’s important to respect and see a person for their work efforts and not make assumptions or judgments based on age.
