If it's the job you want, take it and just eat those six weeks. If want to keep looking, tell them starting in April is a non-negotiable for you and see what they say (knowing that them telling you to take a hike is a possible outcome).
If you want the job, try to negotiate extra leave or a larger sign on bonus due to the parental leave you are leaving on the table at the firm due to their inflexibility on start date.
Fully remote roles are starting to become pretty rare these days in my experience, if it’s really the right fit and moving to a rural area is important to you I wouldn’t think much about the 6 weeks lost. Drop in the bucket over a long career, if you see yourself at this role long-term.
How much leave have you already had? If you’ve recovered physically, that’s more doable than if you’re just a few weeks out from birth. Congrats on the job!
Will you have gotten enough leave before then? I probably would if I already had 4 months and only for a fully remote role. Seems like it’s worth it for your family, but I’d push harder if you had only gotten 2-4 weeks before then.
Still a tough call but for a fully remote position and your family situation, I would probably still take it. Honestly the one thing that would dissuade me would be whether baby would have to go to daycare that early for a full day instead, but that’s because I had a bad experience with daycare. Most of my friends with young kids had to put them into group care at 3 months and they did just fine!
What about the baby’s other parent? Could they take their leave to cover this period?
If the employer can’t agree to a later start date, maybe they could let you start with a shorter work week for the first few weeks so they have some coverage and you ease into things.
