I would be on the next plane to Philly.
Philly is a much better city. Very underrated in my opinion.
M1 is feeling some sort of way. DC is absolutely not a shit hole. Every big city has its issues; but DC is clean and safe in the most populated areas. Philly is neither of those things
Signed,
Someone from neither place who has spent significant time in both and can be partial
Tell ATL about the Philly offer and see if they can meet you halfway - get another $10k out of them
I i already squeezed that peach dry
20k worth it for a brutal winter?
Yep- would be working downtown and living in midtown
$20k in year one isn’t how I’d base a relocation decision
@OP, first and foremost, where do you want to live and work? What’s the social and family scene like in each place and what do you prefer? What’s the nature of the work in each place? Is the COL such that a $20K pre-tax difference is negligible after considerations like housing cost, commute cost, etc?
You might end up living wherever you choose for the next 5, 10, or 50 years, and you’ll spend and earn multiples of whatever you’re considering during any of those timeframes.
Philly real estate is more expensive than Atlanta, so if you associate quality of life with the quality/size of your house, then go with Atlanta. Also, snow sucks, and you only get an inch of it per year in Atlanta.
Yeah I thought housing prices would be equal. I’d pay a bit more in philly for a not as nice place. But some parts of philly have historical charm.
Snow Vs no snow. Atlanta is an underrated city, mainly by those who've never been there.
Hotlanta!
Atlanta!
Philly .... you can live in south jersey ( cherry hill or maple shade ) . As you don’t need to travel much to office you can work mostly from home . Airport is like 40 mins .
Don’t do NJ. Taxes are terrible
Atlanta resident who grew up in Pennsylvania here. Feel free to DM if you have any questions! P.S. Atlanta all the way
did you consider phili city tax? I woukd say go with ATL.
But yes good point
Atlanta resident here. Your $$$ for sure goes further here. Would you buy a house in Midtown or Condo? Or rent? You’ll have access to tons of stuff in midtown if you’re late 20s / early 30s. Your commute will be nice. From a safety perspective, this city can be sketch at times. I live in east Atlanta and I wouldn’t walk around at night outside the confines of my tiny neighborhood. 20k seems insignificant for real happiness and it sounds like you’d enjoy Atlanta more. I hear the food in philly is killer, but it’s pretty good here too. Summer is oppressively hot, but I might take that over a winter. Good luck.
I live in Highlands and love it!
OP created a thread to trash talk Philly for seemingly no reason. For someone who claims to have been in Philly so often you seem to have failed to experience it.
I was thinking the same thing.
I’d begrudgingly choose Philly in this situation. I grew up just outside the city in a nice suburb, went to school in DC, and now been back in Philly for almost four years and planning my escape.
While I’ve never really felt unsafe here, parts of the downtown area are gross and it never seems to get better. Also, a lot of people (especially in industry) are quite provincial. The ground transportation infrastructure is terrible by northeast standards but the airport is ok. On the upside, as someone else already mentioned, the proximity to NY/DC (and cheap flights to Europe from NYC airports) is awesome and should be considered. Also, I just generally don’t click with the south so I can’t see myself taking a job in Atlanta.
for those cities, $$$ is king.
For context: In Philly I’d have an hour commute each way (bc I’m sure af not living in Delaware). Have family and friends in Atlanta. Know nobody in Philly but i make friends easily. Have a dog, so it’s not like I’m gonna hop on a plane every weekend. Really leaning towards Atlanta but that’s a big $ diff.
Why would you have a commute if you lived in philly ? You mean you have a job in Delaware ? How old are you ?
If you decide on ATL DM me. Landed on a West Coast project til March. My 1BR will be empty starting mid NOV. Got fam in LAX and PHX. And yes, utilities are included
Join us in Philly.
In the grand scheme, that does not seem like that big of a difference money-wise. You just listed a lot of things that matter far more IMO than 20k. If you are looking to buy a home, then you’ll get far more in philly. But that that out of the equation and COL is about the same
