Is 1 hour and 20 mins enough time to connect a Delta flight at JFK? I'll flying to JFK with Delta and leaving with Delta

Arriving at JFK 30 mins before flight and need to check bag. Any chance delta will allow me to still check bag or should I try to sneak it through TSA then gate check? Any help welcome!

Worth it to spend 40mins in the car vs 20 to fly your airline of choice with top tier? Or switch airlines and status match to the closer airline/airport? (1K on UA at EWR 40min vs Delta at LGA 20min)
