So I’m up for manager. My coach, reviewers, and leaders I’ve worked with have all supported my promotion, but my coach told me she has no idea what promotions will look like/who will be promoted due to market downturn, etc. I’m sure I’m not alone in this (she is up for SM), but I’m torn. If I get promoted and get a measly raise, then I’m playing catch up until I leave the firm. If I don’t get promoted, then I spend another year doing M work with SC title. Anyone in similar position? Thoughts?

So if you worked hard, made sacrifices and managed to pay off your student loans this bill doesn’t help you. If you still have loans but are making 126K+ this bill does not help you. But if you are a recent grad who hasn’t been in the game long enough to make 125k then we are going to reward you with a 10k discount?! Please make this make sense. We are rewarding recent grads and people that can’t manage finances and telling those that sacrificed and worked hard they get nothing.

How can I motivate myself better for work? I am currently in academia, with a boss who is very laissez-faire. I am driven, but I want to achieve more.

I don't feel so insecure, so I don't derive all my self-value from work, and don't require the "love" or "fame" by approval of my boss or others that much. What seems to work is the "gun to my head", i.e. knowing I need to present my work to someone I value. Or working for someone who I feel close to. Any other strategies worked for you?
